Note: REFN: 21368 John Stearns Abbott Obituary, Detroit Daily Free Press 9-28-1852 "DIED: At his residence in Springwells, near Detroit, on Sunday, the 26th o f Sepember inst. at about 7 o'clock in the morning of apulmonary consumption , John S. Abbott, Esquire, aged thirty-eight years and two months. The sub ject of this notice was born in Tolland, in the state of Connecticut, on the 22nd of July, 1814. He entered Yale College earlyin life, and graduated at that institution, bearing the reputation of an honest man, and of a good ripe scholar, at the age oftwenty-five---He soon after entered the celebrated la w School of the late JudgeDaggett of New Haven. Having completed his prepar atory studies and fittedhimself for the laborious duties of the profession, he came to Detroit, wherein 1835 he established himself in practice, and whe re until within a few months of his death, he continued unceasingly, and to t he manifestinjury of his health, to pursue it. He was a sound and well read lawyer: he early required and always sustained a high reputation at he Bar: andwas esteemed and respected by his associates for his talents and for his honorable and upright bearing. In 1845 he married Lucy Maria, daughter of William Woodbridge, Esq. (late Governor of Michigan) whom he has now---in th e morning of her life---with three beautiful andinteresting children, thus e arly left to deplore this sudden and fearful bereavement. But it was the han d of God: Who can stand against it? For the last two or three weeks of his lif e, the deceased appears tohave given up all hopes of his recovery and calmly and deliberately set himself to the work of preparing himself and his affai rs for that catastrophe which was destined so soon to close his earthly caree rand it is a source of great consolation to the writer of this brief notice, and especially to his distressed family that, (so far as human evidencecan verify it.) he died a sincere and devoted Christian---with a placidityof m ind which the Christian alone can feel---and happy in his confidenthope of a blessed immortality.
