    James Ball enlisted in 1776 at Hampshire, Virginia In Captain William Voss' company of the 12th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel James Woods; he continued in the service of the United States until 1779 for three years, when he was discharged from service in Frederick Town state of Maryland; he was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Stoney Point - and received two wounds at the battle of Brandywine.

    James Ball, private, Virginia Line - 1776. 3 years in the army of the United States during the Revolutionary War.
    Inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky at the rate of eight dollars per month to commence on the 1st of May 1818. payable on the 4th of March and 4th of September of each year by E. Salmon, agent for paying the United States Pensioners at Lexington Kentucky.
    Certificate of Pension issued the 19th of September 1818 and forwarded to Daniel M.C. Payne, Lexington, Kentucky.

    Be it remembered that on the 14th day of May 1821 James Ball made affidavit in open Court and produced a schedule of his property amounting to Fifty Six dollars agreeable to an act of Congress of the first of May 1820 concerning pensioners which is ordered to be entered of these courts District of Kentucky Owen County. On this 14th day of May 1821 personally appeared in open court beeing a Court of Record for the said District and Circuit of Owen County James Ball aged 70 years resident in Own County in Said District Who beeing first duly Sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he Served in the Revolutionary War as follows, that he enlisted in Captain William Voss Company in the 12th Virginia Regiment Commanded by Colonel James Wood that he enlisted in Hampshire County State of Virginia in 1776 for three years that he served in said Regiment until he was transferred to the 8th Virginia Regiment Commanded by Colonel Abraham Bowman and his Captain was Robert Gamble, that he served near four years in the Continental line and was discharged by Colonel Webb at Frederick Town and Frederick County State of Maryland, that he drew a pension and the number of his pension certificate 2525. And I do Solemnly Swear that I was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, Sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the pensioners act of Congress entitled "an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War" passed on the 18th day of March 1818. And that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property or Securities contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than listed or contained in the Schedule hereto annexed and by me Subscribed.     That he is by pursuit a Common laborer has a Wife and three Children which constitute his family that he is very poor and needy. James x Ball (his mark).
    Sworn and declared On the 14th day of May 1821 before me - John Trimble Circuit Judge. State of Kentucky, Owen Circuit, for May Term 1821.
