Posted By: Alan Pitts Date: Tuesday, 12 October 2004, at 1:43 p.m. In Response To: Dr. N.B. Kennedy, 27th Alabama Reg. (Nancie) My notes on this regiment include the following: Nathan B. Kennedy. Appointed Assistant Surgeon Aug. 31, 1863, to rank Feb. 10, 1863; assigned to this regiment [March] 1863. Transferred to Macon MS, June [14,] 1863. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Although I was not able to find any articles about Dr Kennedy, I did find some old financial reports sent in by Hillsboro Lodge #48. In the old original reports from the late 1800's(which are remarkably well preserved) I did find evidence of him being an officer at the lodge in June 1889.He was the Vice Chancellor, the second highest office in the subordinate lodge.Later in 1889 he became the Chancellor Commander, the top officer of the lodge. The records sent in by Hillsboro Lodge #48 did reflect he was a Past Chancellor Commander in 1891. He stayed in the lodge until his death that they show as being August 9,1897. There were no secretarial notes in our possession, but the financial records do give some information on who was a member of a lodge.Dr Kennedy was a Pythian from 1889 until his death in 1897. I hope this does provide you some information you were searching for about him.I'm only sorry I have no other records to tell you more. RespectfullyBob Mehalick, Grand Secretary

Confederate States of America, War Department, Richmond, December 8, 1863. Sir: I have the honor to recommend the following nominations for appointment in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States of America: Surgeons
(p 543) N. B. Kennedy, of Mississippi, to take rank from February 10, 1863. (p 534) John F. Kennedy, of Mississippi, to take rank from March 1, 1863.
460 Confederate Veteran September 1897. Mr. Ed Rodgers, of Hillsboro, Tex., writes: "Dr. N. B. Kennedy, Adjutant of Hill County Camp, died very suddenly of heart disease on August 10. He was very enthusiastic in arranging the details of reunion for the 13th, but was promoted three days before, and we had to move on without him. Dr. Kennedy was born in Sumter Sumter County, Ala., in 1837. He joined the TwentySeventh Alabama Regiment, but was soon detailed as assistant surgeon of it, and later was sent to the hospital service at Lauderdale Springs, Miss., and then to the same service at Uniontown, Ala. Dr. Kennedy came to Hillsboro in 1871. He was intelligent and zealous in all his work."

Involved in a lawsuit that went to the Texas Supreme Court on 18 Jun 1886. Her father, James H Martin, added a codicil to his will that was witnessed by Susan and Nathan Kennedy. The original will apparently divided Martin's estate between Susan and her sister Susan A D Martin. The codicil divided the estate between Susan (50%) and the other 50% to be split by the sister and Susan's 2 kids. The lower court apparently decided in favor of the original will, deciding the codicil was a forgery. Susan appealed that decision and it went to the Texas Supreme Court, who found several errors and sent the case back to the lower court.

Note: James Martin is enumerated in this census as age "11", possibly this should be "61", also born in Louisiana, not Georgia. Is this the father of SWL Martin Kennedy or a young cousin? I believe it to be James Martin (Sr) at this time, pending further study of the Martin family.
