Name: John Ellington II
Birth: 1712 in Prince Georges County, VA
Death: 5 MAR 1783 in Amelia Co, VA
John Ellington (—1783) [EL.2]
John Ellington Prince George County admitted to record a deed conveying land from John Ellington Jr. to Robert Cryer in 1739. Ellington’s wife was then Sabina. Later that same year, John Ellington Jr. and his father of the same name deeded land to Robert Cryer.
John Ellington Jr. was in Amelia County by 10 March 1737/8 when he bought 200 acres on Deep Creek from John Talley Sr. and appeared as a tithable first in 1739. He was later security on the executor’s bond on Talley’s estate. On 7 August 1746, John Ellington Jr. bought from Peter Rowlett 200 acres on Beaverpond Branch. John Ellington Jr. held 242 acres in what is now Dinwiddie County on the south side of White Oak Swamp 12 January 1746/7. The tract was in the hands of Thomas Smith by 1756.
Although Ellington lived in Amelia County, he held land in Prince Edward County. Samuel Goode sold him 738 acres on both sides of Little Saylers Creek 23 February 1758 and Thomas Vaughan sold him 525 acres on 17 December 1764. By 1763 Ellington held 1,138 acres in Amelia County. Ellington sold part of his Goode purchase — 100 acres — to Amos Ellett on 25 February 1773.
John Ellington, James Chappell, and Robert Marshall appraised the estate of Abel Mann in Amelia County by 24 September 1761. John Ellington lent a horse and provided beef and bacon to the Continental Line during the Revolution.
John Ellington died in Amelia County (will dated 5 Mar. 1783 ) by 27 March 1783 when they delivered the appraisement of his estate. He specifically identified seven children in his will and mentioned also Elizabeth Roberts without identifying her relationship. She was evidently a granddaughter. A daughter who married John Morgan was already dead. He then spoke of “... my nine children mentioned, all the residue.” We believe he omitted the names of two children that resulted in the appraisers stating that the estate was in “dispute.” John and Jesse Ellington were Prince Edward County neighbors of his other children and we think John inadvertently omitted them. One of these two men was likely the husband of Elizabeth Farley. When Drusilla Farley wrote her Amelia County will in 1784, she mentioned her daughter Elizabeth Ellington.
Children of John and Sabina (—) Ellington:
David Ellington [EL.2.1] married Amy Morgan. See their family
William Ellington [EL.2.2] married Mary Neal. See their family
Daniel Ellington [EL.2.3] married Sarah Williams in Prince Edward County 13 August 1779. He was appointed a picker of tobacco in 1797. In 1783 Prince Edward County listed Daniel Ellington head of a family of six with three blacks. By 1785 seven were in his family.
Daniel sold out in 1813 and moved his family to Rockingham County, North Carolina, where he had previously acquired 314 acres.
Daniel died in Rockingham [/1813] naming wife, Sally, and nine children.
Peter Ellington [EL.2.4] married Milarett Newman, daughter of Richard Newman who identified them in his 1782-will in Amelia County. With George Cabiness, he witnessed and Amelia County deed for land on Deep Creek in 1775. Peter Ellington sold 63 acres in Raleigh Parish to William Osborne Sr. on 23 April 1784. Milly Ellington relinquished her dower right. This was evidently land he inherited, for when Osborne had bought neighboring land from Peter Irby in 1751, it was next to John Ellington. Archer Farley sold Ellington an adjacent 200 acres on Beaverpond Branch 27 January 1786. Amelia County listed Peter Ellington head of a family of seven in 1785.
Peter died in Nottoway County 27 March 1799.
Mary Ellington [EL.2.4.1] was a legatee of the 1783-will of her paternal grandfather.
8. John2 Ellington, Jr. (John1 ) was born 1712 in Prince George Co., VA, and died 1783 in Amelia Co., VA. He married Sarah Sabina Worsham 1738 in Amelia Co., VA.
