  • ID: I26880
  • Name: Veeke Harms Hinderks 1 2
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: 1765 in Wymeer, Ostfriesland, Germany
  • Death: 25 SEP 1841 in Wymeer, Ostfriesland, Germany 2

Marriage 1 Geerd Hemmes b: 1766 in Wymeer, Ostfriesland, Germany
    • Married: 24 APR 1790 in Wymeer, Ostfriesland, Germany 3
    • Note:
The Die Familien der Kirchengemeinde Wymeer, 1713-1900, book entry # 1211 shows Geerd used the Harms second name when he married Veeke Harms on 4/24/1790. There may have been an error in the books or Geerd may have assumed his wife's name as is common of she was a property owner. There isn't any evidence she owned land so an error is more likely. Use of surnames was not mandated until over 20 years later so the rules were flexible. His other siblings took the patronymic Hemmes or de Jonge surnames.

At least two of Geerd and Veeke's children adopted the Groen surname.

The Wymeer book, entry # 1339, lists a Geerd Hemmes married to Veeke Harms Hinderks without information on their parents. They had a son, Hemme, born on 7/8/1790. Their son's name would fit the naming custom of the day, with the first son being commonly named after the parental grandfather, Hemme Janssen. Veeke's family may have adopted the Hinderks surname. It was common to use the family's adopted surname on death records after the names were mandated though the custom was not universally followed.

Death dates are listed in entry 1339 for both Geerd and Veeke. It is likely their birth dates were calculated from their age at the time of death. Veeke's entry shows her birth date as 1764, 1 year earlier than shown in entry # 1211. This could easily be a rounding error. Geerd's birth date is shown as 1766 in entry # 1211 and 1785 in entry # 1339. The later date is obviously an error, since Geerd would have been 5 years old when his son was born in 1790.

It is impossible to absolutely prove the relationship though evidence supports the conclusion. It is reinforced by the small population of the Wymeer area and limited mobility of people during the era, though Wymeer seems to have more movement than many of the other communities in the area based on my research. This was probably the result of limited work opportunities and the need to move to find jobs to survive.

This record is based on the theory the Geerd and Veeke listed in Wymeer book entries # 1211 and 1339 are the same individuals.
