Moses Genereau alias Jim Cummings was the greatest mystery in our family
Our family always believed his name was Jim Cummings--when my interest in family history bega n to develope I began to question the family and his daughter ,my grandmother told me just e nough truth to make it possible to unravil it. She insisted that her mothers name was Margar et Jane Lavalle, daughter of Michael Lavalle and Margaret Jane Stevenson;they lived at Lake L avalley.

I researched the cumming family for 10 years, the only one I could find owned the brick yard i n Martin Town,Ontario,Canada. A couple of years before her death my grandmother went to Mar tin town to visit someone, she fell ill and had to call her son Vernon to come and get her,thi s was about 1964.
She died 2 jul 1965, in the summer of 1969 I owned a camp site at Pine Lake,N.Y. someone camp ed there in August and left a note to me stating"If you are looking for Maggie's parents yo u should check the name Genereau" this was unsigned and left with the caretaker. This sparke d my interest I wrote the Ontario Provincial Police,Lancaster,Ontario.--one of my grandfather s stories was about "Maggie's" father killing a man in a bar room fight--a portion of the Pol ice reply follows:-dated. 27 DEC 1969 "a elderly gentleman named alex king age 95 recalls a n incident on or about the year you spoke of the man you refer to was tared and featherd an d run out of town. suggest you come to see him, l.a. millar cpl. ontario provincial police"

Two days later I was in Martintown, the police took me to meet Alix King [Alexander Genereau a ged 95 in 1969]
During my visit Alex showed me were the towns people deposited Moses and Ann Macarthy, his gi rl friend, in a creek next to Alex's hoime [same house Moses and family lived]. He said Ol d Jim stood up and in loud voice declared "it was the best dam ride he ever had".Alex told m e how they sat up most of the night picking the tar and feathers of Moses and Ann, "she was p retty young and attractive dressed in tar"next morning Moses and Ann left the area going to B attle Creek,Mich.
It wasn't until 1896 that Alex went to work for the Cooper Lumber co,camp #5 in Spring Cove,N .Y. and ran into Moses Genereau. Known then by the name of Jim Cummings, Alex claimed he move d into Jim's cabin and lived with the family he was able to name all the children, and was ve ry interested in describing Jim's wife. He told me Jim was one of the best Sawyers in the tr ade, he could sharpen a ax that would last all day..he then related a story-that was the sam e story my grandfather used to tell : Jim's axes were so sharp while working a mans head wa s cut off they quickly sat it back on, it being cold the man worked all day, but when he cam e in the bunk house and got warm his head fell of and he died. Must have been a lumberjack ta il.

the death certificate of Jim Cummings 31 Jan 1932 shows his birth place as Battle Creek Mich . and a father named John Mother unknown -all of this is incorrect I have the original birt h and baptisim records from St Michael the Archangel church, in Bellville, Ontario.
His wife's death certificate is partially correct in that her father was Michael Lavallee,bu t her mother was Maria Herin or Travin. not Mary Stewert or Margaret Stephens see birth recor ds and census records.

Now as I look back on this meeting with Alex King,I am wondering why he used this name I am s ure he was the first born son of Moses and Margaret Jane Lavallee. According to my grandmothe r Alex [Cummings]Genereau was born 1874-75 Alex King was 95 in 1969 making him born 1874.. H e lived in Martintown,Ontario and that is the last place my grandmother visited she may hav e tried to get him to help conceal the family history.Alex was rather short and burley fo r a 95 yr oldman. His knowledge of the family was unbelevible-he knew all the children's name s and birth dates, most of the spouses and children. As I ponder it, he new a lot for jus t a friend of the family, still living in same house that Moses had lived in, he told me of w orking in the woods with Moses in the winter and in the brick yard [owned by Jim Cummings]

There was 20 years difference in thier ages. At the time Moses was tared and feathered and ru n out of town Alex would have been 16, he told me in 1896 he lived with the Cummings family w hen he went to work at Camp #5 in Spring Cove,N.Y

The information that Alex gave me in 1969 was difficult to believe but over the past 30 or s o years all of it has proven to be correct my only regret is that I was not as Knowlegeable t hen, that I might have inquierd further about the family.
