  • Note: Marshal, William, 1st Earl of Pembroke (and Strigul) c. 11 46 -- 1219 Knight, and regent of England (1216--19), a neph ew of the Earl of Salisbury. He won a military reputation f ighting the French, supported Henry II against Richard I, a nd went on a crusade to the Holy Land. Pardoned by Richard , he was made an earl, appointed a justiciar, and shared th e marshalcy of England with his brother, John, until the la tter's death gave him full office. He saw further fightin g in Normandy (1196--9), supported the new king (John) bu t spent the years 1207--12 in Ireland, returning to becom e the king's chief adviser. After John's death in 1216, h e was appointed regent for the nine-year-old Henry III, an d as such concluded a peace treaty with the French. 7
