In his will Joseph Ball left Mary three slaves, 15 head o f cattle, and "all the feathers in the kitchen loft to be p ut into a bed for her." She also received 400 acres of lan d further up river at Little Falls Run (today in Stafford C ounty, Virginia).

When her mother died she received half of her furnishings , most of her mothers clothes, two gold rings and a "good p acing horse". Within a few months her older half-brother , John Johnson, also died and she received the 600 acres le ft by their step-father Richard Hues.
