Elijah James changed his name to Robert "Bob" .

    ( Notes from Clete Ramsey)
One thing that raises a question with the Elijah-Robert switch, was information that appeared on page 321, Vol.X, of "North Carolina Troops 1861 - 1865: A Roster" An entry was found for Sergeant Elijah James Jackson, not Robert Jackson, under Co. G, 47th North Carolina Infantry. This Company G was raised in Franklin and Granville Counties and was enlisted in those counties in Feb. - March 1862.

Note by R. H. J.: Elijah apparently didn't like his name and wanted to change it to Robert or Bob. The 1860 census lists him as "Robert" but elswhere he is listed as Elijah or E. J. It appears that he never legally changed his name from Elijah James.

Elijah's entry stated: " Resided in Franklin County were he enlisted at age 20, May 5, 1862, for the war. Mustered in as a private. Reported present in Jan.-Feb., 1863. Promoted to Sergeant prior to March 1, 1863. Wounded in the abdomen at Gettysburg, PA, July 1, 1863. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Reported present in Jan.-Feb., 1864. Captured at or near Fort Stedman, VA, March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 28, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance."
