Mons was baptized in the Loen church. Mons and Kristianna were married in 1873 when Mons was 40 years old. They moved to "Remmem Indre" from Tresfjord at some time after they were married. The oldest son inherited the farm from his father either on his father's death or when his father could no longer work. Since Mons' older brother Samuel would inherit the farm, it would be natural for Mons to move to a new farm to start his family. The custom at that time in Norway was that when people moved they adopted the name of the place or farm where they lived. That is the reason that their last names were Remmen - they moved to a farm with that name. Elling's name was listed as "Remmem" when he came to the United States, and that would be the case if he was residing in Remmem Indre when he left Norway.
