Text: A long-time resident of the county celebrated his 85th birthday on Thursday with a dinner prepared and served in the family home at 321 W. Virginia street.
                          M. C. Fuqua, who came to Floydada in 1924, was honored with a surprise gathering of the friends who called throughout the day. Children who could not attend their father's celebration greeted him by telephone and birthday gifts. Another Floyd county early settler who also observed his 85th birthday the same day as Mr. Fuqua was T. J. Campbell, resident patent at Peoples Hospital. The two men always get-togerter (sic) for a gab-fest on their birthday. Mr. Campbell spent his day at Dougherty with a son and family and later enjoyed a visit from Mr. Fuqua at the hospital. Three of Mrs. and Mrs. Fuqua's daughters and a son called at the family home with best wished on Thursday. Five other children who live a distance were unable to be present. Mr. Fuqua, who is a jolly person and quite active despite his age, was born in San Saba County, Texas. He met and married Mrs. Fuqua in Hamilton County, Aug. 26, 1900. The couple came to Floyd County 36 years ago, first settling in Center community where they farmed. They moved into town in 1944 following Mr. Fuqua's retirement. His love for outdoor work keeps him busy in the family garden and yard. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fuqua. One died in infancy and a son Van, was lost in a training flight accident in the states during World War II. They have 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Joe Dunn, Mrs. Clarence Ashton and Floyd Fuqua all of Floydada; Mrs. Hubert Scott, Amarillo; Mrs. Jack Hunter and Mrs. Dick Scheibel of Dallas; Mrs. Gordon Fowler, Davenpot, Iowa; Truman Fuqua, Cleburne; and Mac Fuqua Jr., of College Station. Of those calling at the home Thursday were Mrs. Ashton, Mrs. Don and Mrs. Scott, and Floyd and family.
                          Note:
Possibly from "The Floyd County Hesperian." M. C. Fuqua's 85th birthday was Thursday, 9 Jun 1960. Mrs. Joe Dunn is Grace Marie Fuqua Dunn. Mrs. Clarence Ashton is Amelia Mae Fuqua Ashton. Floyd Fuqua is Floyd Freeman Fuqua. Mrs. Hubert Scott is Arma Lee Fuqua Scott. Mrs. Jack Hunter is Dorothea Fuqua Hunter.
