Hi Pat!
I have corresponded with you before concerning a Carr family that lived in Jackson County, AL then Saline County, IL and Stone County, MO. I thought I'd let you know that I just got some new information on Elihu Carr. (I still have not yet gotten anything specific on John Carr's place of birth in SC.) [NOTE: See mentioned correspondence under Elihu Carr's father, John Carr.]
Elihu had a daughter named Martha Ann. She was born in 1878. In 1890, Congress passed a pension act making it possible for minor children to gain access to a father's military pension. It turns out that Elihu enlisted in the service on July 10, 1864 at Galena. He mustered out July 16, 1865. In Martha Ann's pension application, her curator indicated that Elihu died November 19, 1881. In that application, it shows that Elihu's wife was named Rutha Rebecca, not Rosa or Bertha as is indicated in a number of transcribed records. Rutha remarried a man named Jacob Horn on October 13, 1882. The Horns can be found in Carroll County, AR in the 1900 census, but without children. In 1910, Jacob is back in Stone a widower.
The pension application was made in 1891. It indicated that Martha was disabled by fits, or foolish spells, which the person believed to be permanent. At this time, there is no indication that her mother was around. She was under a curator named W.F. Webster. This is interesting because there is a genealogy on RootsWeb for Martha showing that she married someone named Lemuel Alexander Jones and died in 1924. I have written to the lady who posted it, but she wasn't able to help me further regarding the family. I cannot find any sign of this Jones family in the census.
So there you have it. We know what happened to Elihu, his wife Rutha, and his daughter Martha A. right up to 1894 when the pension was stopped.
Thanks again for your work!

REPLY: Robert --
Did you notice that Elihu was carried as Elisha Carr in the 1880 census, and that he and family were enumerated on the same page with Jacob Horn? The wife situation is difficult -- she was Rutha R in the 1900 census, but Rosa R in 1880 and Rebecca in 1870. Maybe the Rosa R was just a misunderstanding of Rutha by the enumerator?? I was concerned about the ten year gap in kids and wondered if the wives were the same between 1870 and 1880, but the 1900 census reveals that the wife had seven children, and only four were still alive in 1900. That could mean that she had three children in the 1868 to 1878 period and lost them all before 1880.
As for Lemuel and Martha Jones, I found them in the 1900 Federal Census for Arkansas in Sulpher, AR (Pope Co), pg 75A. The handwriting is awful -- I wish you luck. It looks like Lem and Marthy Jones. They married about 1894 and had two children in that census. The dob for Martha is about right -- Oct 1879. (She was one yr old in 1880)

I'm glad to have helped in some way. Digging in original records is always best. I of course haven't been able to chase down original records on all the Carrs. Thanks for reporting back your findings. ____________________________ From: Robert Schneider [mailto:robert_s_63134@yahoo.com] Sent: Saturday, July 02, 2005 7:49 PM To: Pat Noble Subject: RE: Elihu Carr
Hi Pat!
I want to take a few minutes here to answer your letter. Some of the things you mentioned have struck me, too.
Yes, I did notice the Elisha for Elihu switch in 1880. I thought perhaps Elisha was a middle name, but the pension application showed Elihu J. So much for that idea. I guess it was a slip of the census taker.
The proximity to Jacob Horn also struck me. How about this? Two years later Jacob Horn's wife Mary was out of the picture, Elihu was dead, and Rutha remarried Jacob. Quite a set of coincidences.
I still haven't been able to trace Elihu's sister Bethana or Bethany or Bertha. I had seen the marriage record from Stone County showing a marriage between Burtha Carr and Jacob Horn. I originally thought that was Bethana mistranscribed, but obviously it turned out to be Rutha. Rutha Rebecca that is.
Now we come to another issue. There is a marriage record from Stone showing a marriage between Elihu and Rebecca Lawson in 1870. The pension application mentions that marriage but doesn't contain a copy of the license. Elihu in 1880 and in 1870 shows children named Mary E. (born abt 1860) and James H. (born abt. 1868). Were they illegitimate? or were they children by an earlier marriage? If so, where is the marriage record? I can't find one listed in Stone County.
Interestingly, I can't find any record of those kids after 1880. I did a little census searching and found a James Carr in Woodruff County, AR who was born in MO, wife named Myrtle. I have no way, though, to connect him to Elihu. I would like to get in touch with the experts in Stone to see if an epidemic swept the area in the early 1880s. That might explain the disappearance of everybody.
Thanks a million for pointing me in the right direction on the census matter. I found the families in 1900 and 1910. In 1910 Lem is named Lemetta. I know now that the RootsWeb genealogy was accurate. There is now another issue, however. That Rootsweb genealogy containing Elihu shows that he married someone name Rebecca Applegate. Now what's going on?
Finally, have you seen the 1876 Stone County Ag census? In the matter of what happened to Nancy Taylor Carr, there is a Nancy E. Kerr living right next door to the Edwards family (in laws) on one side, the Horn family on the other side, and two families from the Taylors (blood relations). It also shows Elihu's wife named Kathy! So much for transcriptions!
Thanks again!

John and Carolina Lawson, 45 TN and 43 TN, are enumerated in the 1860 Federal Census for Missouri next door to William and Bertha Lawson, ages 17 TN and 16 MO, respectively. They are all neighbors of Joseph and Elizabeth Applegate, 62 VA and 50 TN and family (MO), and family. They all live in Buchanan, MO (Taney Co).
Looks to me that Bertha Applegate married William Lawson, who probably went off to war and died and she remarried as Rebecca Lawson in 1870. The clue was when she married Jacob Horn in 1882 as Bertha R Carr. I had checked earlier census records for Rosa, Rebecca and Rutha, but not Bertha.

To be sure I went back to 1850 and looked at Joseph Applegate, who was living in Dallas, MO (Greene Co). His daughter was listed as Ruthy R Applegate!!
Oh, yeah! Fourth of July, baby.
