Chuck and Betty had thorough physical exams before leaving on vacation to Maine. They took the leisurely drive home, travelling a bit west into Wilkes Barre, PA to see the scenery. Chuck had suggested earlier that they drive straight through to Baltimore to surprise the kids and be home a day early. But when they neared Wilkes Barre, he changed his mind, saying he was developing a headache. Chuck was experiencing an aneurism, which would soon burst and cause a cerebral hemmorage and stroke. He was taken to a hospital in Pittston, PA, where he spent several days before he died.

Chuck was the oldest child of four: himself, Don, Ray and Elaine. They lived in Milwaukee, WI as children. Their father, a WWI veteran, died when Chuck was about twelve. Chuck left home after his mother remarried. He joined the US Coast Guard.

Chuck worked at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland as an engineer.

Chuck had a great interest in bird watching. He headed the Blue Bird Society, which helped restore blue bird populations in the US. He loved gardening, planting all sorts of varieties around his property. Chuck and Betty had a large pool built in their backyard, a sun room off the kitchen adjoining the pool area. They were members of the Chesapeake Beach Ranch Club on the shore and went there often.
