Note: 1738: Plympton, Mass [birth] 1791: One of first two settlers of Plainfield, Vt; arriving with Seth Freeman in the fall of 1791. Theodore Perkins also arrived about this time. They returned each summer until they had fields cleared and a house built, ready for their families [Plainfield Town History] "In the autumn of 1791 Seth Freeman of Wendell, NH and Isaac Washburn of the neighboring town of Croydon came into Plainfield, Vt by way of the East Hill in Montpelier. When they came to what is now (1880) the four corners [just south of the cemetery on Lower Rd in 1998, no intersection there now] ... Washburn decided that there should be his pitch ["L.C.Batchelder" on 1873 Beers Map]. "They camped for the night by the side of a hemlock log in the hollow between the south district [#6] school house and Lewis Durfee's. Freeman chose this locaton ["E.Freeman" on 1873 Beers Map]. The next year they returned and made these pitches. "When a man made a clearing before the land was surveyed, it was usual when the lines were run to survey him out a farm that would include all of his clearing without regard to the regular lot lines, and such a piece was called a "pitch"." [Child's.p437]; moved to Plainfield, Vt with his son, Isaac Jr, and Polly Reed who later m. Benjamin Niles [HG,iv717] 1799: On list of men who had taken the Freeman's oath in 1799 (with Alden, Ebenezer, and Seth Freeman & Miles, Isaac Jr, and Asa Washburn) [Book 1 Plainfield Town Records, p.4] 1799: (or his son) named constable, Town collector, lister, and surveyer [Book 1, Page 3, Plainfield Town Records] 1802: (or his son) named constable, collector, lister, and highway surveyor [Book 1, Page 12, Plainfield Town Records] Lived with his son, Isaac, Jr [HG,iv717] 1812: (Jan 11) Isaac Jr sold the last 190 acres of the Washburn Pitch to Bradford Kinne for $2000, stating he was the "sole owner ... free from every encumbrance ... excepting ... the claim Ira Day has ... by a mortgage". The property is described in the mortgage deed as: "whole of the tract known by the name of 'Washburn Pitch' and the same farm on which I now live; except that deeded to Asa Washburn (70 acres) and 30 acres to Elijah Perry and 30 acres to Abraham Powers; containing about 190 acres more or less; ... for $2000" plus $200 interest. [Plainfield Land Records Book 1 Pages 456-7] 1812: "not able to pay for their lands twice (once from the agent for Ira Allen and again from Ira, when he claimed the first sale invalid); Isaac Jr and Sr sold their farm and rem to Lisle, NY and then to Indiana, but never again possessed much property."
