    1789: He and Martha were the first settlers of Walden, coming with their two children, Jonathan and Betsey [WTH] His being the only family for the three succeeding years [HG,i426]
    They lived in the blockhouse on the Bayley-Hazen Military Road while they were building a log house nearby where 9 children were born; their 3rd, Jesse, was born in the blockhouse [WTHpp20;37]
    The blockhouse stood about a mile west of what is now the end of Valley Road, near the Cabot town line.

    BIOGRAPHY:
    "Nathaniel Perkins, a Revolutionary soldier, who served in the battle of Bunker Hill, was one of the first settlers in Walden, and came from Northfield, NH in 1789, locating in the southwestern part of the township
    "His family then consisted of his wife, one son, Jonathan, and one daughter, Betsey, who became Mrs Stevens
    "After he came to this town [Walden] he had born to him children as follows:
    "Jesse, Hannah, Nathaniel, George, Matilda, Susan, Martha who married Lewis Hill, Sally who married Frederick Whitcher, Augusta who married Benjamin Durrell, and Irving." [Child's]
    Nathaniel was the first Town Clerk (1794-5) and one of the first three selectmen (1794-5,1800,1803-6). In 1795 he was elected the first representative [WTH][HG,i426]
    The first sermon was given at his house, and he taught the first school in the blockhouse in 1796 [WTH]

    Rev War: Served as a private in Capt. Hutchin's Company, Col Stark's regiment at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17 1775 [DAR recs per WTHp37]
    War of 1812: Member of 1st Co., 3rd Regt, 4th Divison of the Vermont Militia in 1812 [WTHpp.180-1 quoting Walden Misc. Book 1, page 183]
    The 1841 "Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Services" includes under Walden town, Caledonia county, Vermont: "Nathaniel Perkins, 1st; aged 84; head of household" => b.ab. 1756.
    Is this, OR his father, Nathaniel Sr, the Nathaniel Perkins, Rev.War.Vet., Pensioner under the Act of June 7, 1832, res. in Caledonia County per p.58 of Walter H. Crockett's paper, "Soldier's of the Revolution Buried in Vermont..." excerpted from "Proceedings of the Vermont Historical Society 1903-4 & 1905-6" and reprinted 1973, 1991, 1996, 2003? Only one Nathaniel listed.
    After publication of his paper, he compiled a list which gives the town of burial in Caledonia County as Walden. This list is published on p.80 with the above paper from "Proceedings".

    OBITUARY:
    "In Walden, 6th Sept. Mr. Nathaniel Perkins, aged 88. Mr. P. was the first man who settled in the town of Walden--a revolutionary pensioner--and for 36 years a member of the Methodist E. church. He died in the triumphs of faith." ["St Johnsbury, Vt Caledonian" Tues Oct 11 1842]
