Enlisted as Private from Goshen, Connecticut, in Capt Elijah Chapman Company, Sept. 26, 1777 for three years. Discharged Sept. 26, 1780. (see pg.223 Connecticut Men of the Revolution). Enlisted in Capt Elijah Chapman Company from Torrington, Connecticut. Mar 23, 1782 for one year. David Holmes was in Torrington as early as May 6, 1782 when his earmark for cattle was recorded. He moved to Winchester, Conn. as early as 1786 , where he owned and occupied the south part of the Rockwell farm (since owned by Mrs. Jerusha R Boyd) on which he built the old farmhouse which was blown down by the great tornado of 1882. He sold out to Merritt Bull in 1805. In 1806 he moved with his family to Russell, Hampshire Co, Mass, where he died at the age of 60 years.
He was the brother of Joseph Holmes, stepbrother of Capt Zebina Smith, and half brother of Theodor Smith, all of Winsted.
He was a United States pensioner (see List of Children in Boyd's Annals of Winchester, Conn. pg 298).
