He could not have been born later then 1609 because he h ad to have been 25 by 1634 to meet the minimum age requirement for bein g a freeman.

Pack (753) speculates that he was from Biddenden, Kent, England, but pr ovides no supporting evidence.

    • Note:
I am not sure which I find more interesting, the actual history of Jona than Hatch's family or the positive spin applied by the Hatch Genealogi cal Society (800) in their "Genenalogy & History of the Hatch Family" ( 1925). The HGS calls father Thomas "a very pious man" of "exemplary cha racter" held in high esteem by others. Of daughter Lydia, HGS is comple tely silent (although it describes her husband in great detail). HGS ch aracterized son Jonathan as a "venenrable patriarch," a man of "romanti c adventure" and "great energy and force of character and a decided wil l of his own which brooked no unseemly restrains." HGS specifically den ies that his "early struggles" were due to any "depravity." HGS further s pins a story about how "shortly after King Phillip's War Jonathan Hatch b ought of Capt. Church three Indians, a man, wife and child, probably pr isoners, ... for the apparent purpose of liberating them." In the court r ecord of the event, Jonathan is referred to as " Goodman Hatch."

Jonathan Hatch was an abused child who grew up to be a real bastard of a n adult. During his life, Jonathan appeared in court no less than 11 ti mes. As an adolescent, he was publicly whipped for being a vagabond and /or fleeing his indentured service on three occasions. At age 14, he wa s tried for having sex with his sister Lydia Hatch. Lydia (then 15) was w hipped for incest with Jonathan as well as for enticing a married man. A s an adult, Jonathan encouraged those who threatened the life of the Go vernor, sold liquor and guns to Indians, and spent time with another ma n's wife (the court lacked the evidence to charge him with adultery). H e enslaved a family of 3 Indians, sold the child's parents to the mothe r's brother for 6 after maybe 3 years, and kept their child as an inde ntured servant until age 24.

HGS, however, failed to mention the sex crimes and only a few of the ot her crimes. Whether or not the author deliberately excluded the sex cri mes, "venerable," "pious," and "unseemly" is not the way that I would c haracterize this family. I doubt young Jonathan repeatedly ran away ris king public whippings in an effort to seek "romantic adventure." His fa mily was so highly dysfunctional that Jonathan was willing to risk his l ife in order to get away. The child was frightened and "depravity" seem s to me an excellent characterization. As an adult, Jonathan was a loos e cannon and a real bastard. Buying a family of Indian POWs, enslaving t hem for years, selling the child's parents and indenturing the child un til age 24 is not, as HGS calls it, "liberating" them. HGS's gross omis sions, misinterpretations, and mischaracterizations so distort the trut h that I wonder what other facts she left out or altered.
    • Married: BEF 1621 in England
    • Note: Patch (753) speculates that his wife Grace may have been Welch and been b orn Grace Lewis, but cites no primary records. Hale-Hatch (800) says th at she was young and attractive and may have been Welch. Family lore is t hat she was popular among the men and when she had narrowed her prospec ts down to Thomas and one other, she decided to marry the winner of a r eaping match (most every man was a farmer). Lore has it that during th e match, she decided that she favored Thomas and helped him a bit to gi ve him the edge. 1 2
