"Nicholas Ackley was of Hartford, Connecticut probably as early as 1649, a nd certainly in 1655. . .""Nicholas Ackley had two pieces of land record ed to him in HARTFORD. One of these he bought, after 1655, from Robert San ford and SOLD ON MARCH 20, 1667-68, TO JOHN MITCHELL, when it was describ ed as 'Containing by estimtion Fower Acres be it more or less abuttingto Z achery Fields land north & Edward Stebbings Sowth & mrs. Hookers east & t he North River wes.'"

[Is it possible that the John Mitchell he sold land to was the son or rela tion of his first wife, Hannah (Ford) Mitchell Ackley????????????????

[my note: Michell, John Connecticut HARTFORD CO. HARTFORD 1670 Coloni al Census]
NOTE: Nicholas was possibly one of several men and youths brought ov er by William Wadsworth. The latter is supposed to have reared and employ ed Daniel Brainerd, who later became a fellow-pioneer at Haddam with Nicho las.

FROM: Dawes-Gates Ancestral Line by Ferris
"He settled in Hartford, Connecticut, probably by 1649. He had two piec es of land recorded there, one a parcel of 4 acres of upland bought from R obert Sanford after 1655, bounded west on the North River, the other his h ome property of two acres with a house, orchard and pasture, located on t he highway leading from the little river to ''ye pownd Hill.'...Nicholas s erved as chimney viewer, an office similar to that of today's fire marsha l, probably as early as 15 Feb 1655, when his name is connected with a rep ort to the Town Meeting of "Leaders wanting 54," and he certainly held th at position on 9 Feb 1662...(He) was one of the twenty-eight young men w ho bought land in 1662 at '30 Mile Island,' later called Haddam...(He) own ed at Haddam, besides a fourteen-acre home lot, 'the little Island at t he lower end of the Cove' and a 'six acre lot towards Saybrook.' This co ve is where the Salmon River enters the Connecticut River...It is unlike ly that (he) was a church member. The small community at Haddam had no mi nister at the time, and the religious residents took their children to Mid dletown for baptism. ...Nicholas and his wife, Hannah conveyed, 19 Mar 16 71/2, to William Spencer (son of Gerard), not the man who later married th eir daughter, all their rights to land on the east side of the Connectic ut River between the Salmon River and Lyme bounds. That Miriam was stepmo ther of all the children is proved by the probate records." - The Ancest ry of Lorenzo Ackley and His Wife Ema Arabelle Bosworth, Ackley-Bosworth G enealogy, By Parke, pp1-04

As mentioned elsewhere on these pages, Thomas Sanford is the subje ct of a rather voluminous work by Carlton E. Sanford that was privately pu blished in 1911. In the appendix of that work are a number of shorter topi cs. The following is found under the general heading of "Other Pioneer San fords." The first two, Robert and Andrew, are known to be brothers of Thom as and are thought to have arrived in Hartford in the company of their Unc le, Andrew Warner. The next, Zachary, is believed to be a close relati ve of these three brothers: Carlton speculates that he is either a cous in or younger brother at various places in the book. The next two are forJ ohn and Richard, neither of any known relation to Thomas. A number of othe rs are included there, but I have yet not started entering them here.

He was a brother of Thomas Sanfor d, the pioneer to this country. (Savage states that this Ann was a daught er of Jeremy Adams, which statement was no doubt based on the stateme nt in Adam's will, calling Zachary Sanford his grandson. Recent resear ch by A. D. Hodges, Jr., of Boston, a most painstaking and able genealogis t, convinces him that Ann was not a daughter of Mr. Adams. He finds the Za chary Sanford married Sarah Willett, granddaughter of Jeremy Adams, whi ch would account for his calling him grandson in his will. Jeremy Adams ma rried Silence, widow of Samuel Greenhill, about 1636. There is no reco rd or evidence of a previous marriage. Mr. Adams mentions only Zacha ry in his will, when there were in 1682 at least 7 living children of Robe rt and Ann. (See Hartford Deeds, dist. 399. Savage has him in Hartfo rd in 1645 and the Town Records give the birth of his daughter Elizabe th as Feb. 19, 1645. Mr. Sanford's will was proven September 7, 1676. Mr s. Ann Sanford's will was proven Sept. 7, 1682, and mentions children Zach ary, Robert, Ezekiel, Hannah and Abigail, and speaks of Robert, Hannah a nd Abigail for "their loving care" of her.
