Dear List: At present, nothing is known about Ephraim Fuller's birth nor family. In the Hart Genealogy, by Alfred Andrews, it was noted that Ephraim's daughter Mary, married Benjamin Hart in 1772. There it was stated that her father, Ephraim came from Berlin. I surmise that he came from a Fuller family in the early Town of Wethersfield, Connecticut. Later a part of that Town became part of Berlin, Connecticut., in the North-east s ection of Berlin, known as "Beckley Quarter" See "History of Berlin, Connecticut ", by Katherine M. Norton, Published by Tuttle & Morehouse & Taylor Co., 1915. "Sgt Beckley first settler of Berlin came from New Haven to Beckley Quarter, which was part of Wethersfield in 1660." In 1670 Wethersfield confirmed the Grant, b ut officially Berlin was organized in May of 1783 from Farmington, Middletown and Wethersfield. "Fuller, Ephraim Weth. bot ld in Tyringham [ Mass] Equivalent in 1770". Conn. Quarterly Vol. II. pg 397. A check on this transaction in the County Court of Records in Pittsfield shows that Tyringham Equivale nt was a section of land that eventually became East Otis, Massachusetts. It was called an" Equivalent" because two different groups of early colonists wer e given the same land in Tyringham. Today that is swamp land, but in the Colonial times that area was valuable for it was a supply area for wood us ed in basketry and in keg manufacture, and for the growing of Hops, for the la nd is called "Hoplands" to this day. As a settlement of the dispute, "Tyringham Equivalent", land now in East Otis, Massachusetts, was offered and accepted by a group of Colonists. The survey of the area was made by a Wethersfield man, Joale ? Griswold, Surveyor for Hartford County, and t he land was then known as "Louden". Ephraim had, indeed purchased "Lott" # 7 on the survey on March 1, 1770 from Return Holcomb of Tyringham for £25 [Vo l. 6 Pg 535]. Later in 1795 he sold a part for £10 to Jacob Cook and his son Jacob Jr. I find no record of the rest of the land being sold. or transfer red. Ephraim Fuller ran "Fuller's Tavern" located on Berlin Street in that Town. See Katherine Norton. Where it was stated: "Elisha Cheny probably came to Berlin as early as 1793,....they lived for a time on Berl in Street in the house known as Fuller's Tavern, now owned by the Atwater family". This Tavern is mentioned in "Washington's Travels in New England ", by Charles Eugene Cleghorn III "The president lodged the night of Nov. 9-10 [1789] in Hartford, then had breakfast on the 10th at 7:00 AM in the taver n of Ephraim Fuller in Berlin, constructed in 1769 and standing at 1055 Worthington Ridge Road". Census Records for Hartford County for 1790 discloses an Ephraim Fuller i n Berlin. His # therein was 449. . Who is Ephraim Fuller?
