New researchers should note that although records show Travis and his children living in different counties, e.g. Floyd, Morgan, Montgomery; they did not necessarily move. As new counties were formed by carving up others, their resident county sometimes simply changed names and boundaries.
Note: There may have been earlier land records lost to courthouse disasters, but the first obtained for Travis Lawson in Kentucky shows a survey of fifty acres on December 9, 1828, by virtue of one Ky. Land Office Warrant No. 17097 in Morgan County on a branch of Little Blackwater, including the place that said Lawson now lives on.” A survey for an additional fifty acres was completed on January 31, 1833 , “on the south side of Little Blackwater near Samuel Dennis’ old place.” Travis also obtained 250 acres, Patient # 07782, on March 109, 1838, at the head of Blackwater Creek. Additional surveys exist for Travis jointly with sons and separately from 1828-1836 for William, Joseph, James, Henry, and Travis, Jr. All are located on Blackwater and Little Blackwater watercourses. Travis and Maisie’s children settled land around later. Later deeds exist for those children but will not be included here.
I have been given data about some of his descendants and although most of it appears to be correct some still requires verification, most notably the lines of his sons John & James. I am not confident that the grandsons of Travis are all with the proper parents. The head counts on early census records are not adding up for some. Please correct where you see needed.
The following land records all pertain to either Travis or his descendants.
