Note: This site and the information on it is a work-in-progress and will continually change as more information is uncovered. Much confusing and incorrect information has been written about the ancestry of Francis and Lucy Dudley Lewis of Amelia/Dinwidde Cos., VA and Hancock Co., GA; i.e. Sarah Travers Lewis Scott Anderson's 'Lewises, Meriwethers And Their Kin'; John Aylmer Lewis's 'The Lewis Family of Mt. Holly and the Ark-La-Tex'; Michael Cook's 'Pioneer Lewis Families', etc. This research started as an attempt to correct the previously printed misinformation and to show that Francis Lewis 1st, grandfather of United States Senator Dixon Hall Lewis from Alabama, was NOT the son of John and Catherine Fauntleroy Lewis of Halifax Co., VA, commonly called John Lewis 'of Halifax'(Warner Hall Lewis family. SOURCE: 'Lewis of Warner Hall' by Merrow Egerton Sorley. Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD, 1979), but in fact, the son of George and Catherine Lewis of Prince George/Amelia Cos., VA. See below for the Will of John Lewis 'of Halifax County, Virginia' printed in its entirety. There is no mention made of a Francis Lewis or his descendants. See also the following land deed record showing George Lewis deeding his plantation to his son Francis. These two sources strongly imply, I believe, that Francis Lewis was the son of George Lewis. In the process of doing this research, I have tried to gather as much information on the family and descendants of George and Catherine Lewis that is available, listing all source documents that have been found to date. I have included collateral family lines when necessary to show the interrelationships between the various families connected with these Lewises. Finding which Lewis family George Lewis belongs in still eludes me, although I suspect that he is a member of the Lewis family found early in Henrico/Prince George Cos., VA. Compiler, Patrick S. McKinney ----- Will of John Lewis 'of Halifax County', Virginia written in 1787 before he moved to Caswell County, North Carolina. "July Court, 1790." In the name of God, Amen. I John Lewis of the County of Halifax and State of Virginia, calling to mind the uncertainty of life do make and ordain while in perfect state of health and memory this my last Will and testament in the manner following: Imprimis. It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid. Item. It is my will and desire that my beloved wife Catherine Lewis shall have exclusive of what the law allows the use of all my household and kitchen furniture together with the use of the following negroes namely: Little, Fran, Sallie, Millie, and Cesia, during her natural life. Item. It is my will and desire that my beloved wife Catherine Lewis shall have Tom Plump, and Robbin Flagg in her dower of slaves. Item. I give unto son John Lewis, all of the lands I die possessed of in Halifax County together with the one third part of my personal estate, to him and his heirs forever. Item. I give unto my son John Lewis, as trustee for my daughter Sarah Taylor one third part of my personal estate for her use during her natural life and at her death to be equally divided between the heirs of her body to them and their heirs forever. Item. I give unto my daughter Apphia Allen one third part of my personal estate to her and her heirs forever. Item. It is my will and desire that at the death of my beloved wife, all the negroes, household and kitchen furniture be equally divided between my son John Lewis, my daughter Sarah Taylor and my daughter Apphia Allen as before mentioned. Item. It is my will and desire that my son John Lewis shall have at the death of my beloved wife, Tom Plump if alive in her proportion of the estate she dies possessed of, to him and his heirs forever. It is my will and desire that my Executors hereafter named sell all my land except what I have already given to my son John at the more convenient time and place, and the money arising from the sale of said land to be appropriated to the use of paying my just debt and the balance if any to be equally divided between my son John and my daughter Sarah and my daughter Apphia to them and their heirs forever. Lastly I nominate and appoint my son John Lewis, Major David Allen and William John Pellet Executors to this my last Will and testament revoking all other heretofore made by me. As Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this eighth day of June, one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven. John Lewis, Senior (m) (seal) Signed sealed and acknowledged in presence of John Winters, his mark Jurat Archie Walter John X Roper -Jurat his mark The execution of this Will was duly proven in open court by the oath of John Winters and John Roper two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and on motion ordered to be recorded. At the same time John Lewis (m) and John Pettet qualified as executors and letters issue. Teste A. Murphy, Clerk Court North Carolina Caswell County I, Mary A. Horton, Deputy Clerk Superior Court, of Caswell County, North Carolina, do hereby certify that the foregoing is a true copy of the above Will as it appears of record in the office of the Clerk Superior Court in book of Wills "b", page 340. Witness my hand and seal of said court, this 29th day of January, 1934 Mary A. Horton, (seal) Deputy Clerk Superior Court." --------------------- From "Colonial Wills of Henrico County, Virginia Part One, 1654-1737" by Benjamin B. Weisiger III, pages 138 and 139(page 426 of Will Book). Will of John Gale of Province of North Carolina, near Old Currituck Inlet. (( this area is right across the border from old Norfolk Co., VA that became Princess Anne Co., later on. It's due south of Virginia Beach, VA)). To my son GEORGE LEWIS, a negro man To my son James Gale, a negro, and items To my daughter Mary Gale, a negro and items To my son Evan Jones, my smith's tools, provided he will take the land purchased of him To daughther Mary, the tract on Old Currituck Sound, joining Timothy Eye's. If any child die under age, then the rest to get their share. To daughters Catherine, Mary, and Elizabeth, 7500 lbs tobacco due from my son John Gale, living in Kent County, Maryland. Rest of estate to three daughters, 5 shillings to son John in Maryland. SON GEORGE LEWIS to be executor 2 October, 1733 Witnesses: John Worsham, William Worsham, John Worsham, Jr. Recorded Feb. 1733.
6 February 1733 Inventory of John Gale by John Archer, Robert Elam, John Worsham, Jr. Value 78/2/2 pounds. Presented in court by William Worsham, Gentleman on behalf of George Lewis, and recorded April 1734. NOTE: I believe that the George Lewis, named in John Gale's Will above, is the same as George Lewis of Amelia Co., VA. I also now believe that George Lewis was married to Catherine Gale, daughter of John Gale, both listed in the above Will. No marriage record has been found. The fact that the Gayle name was used in successive generations of this family seems to point to this likelyhood. However, the Gayle name could have been used by this Lewis family as a courtesy to John Gale, Sr. for raising George Lewis after his father died and his mother re-married to John Gale. This last statment is dependent on the accuracy of the below email from Alton Rogers stating that John Gale was married 3 times--the 2nd time to the widow Lewis, mother of George Lewis. The Court suits brought by Evan Jones in 1730s (listed below) show that Evan Jones was assigned to George Lewis, lending some credibility to the suppositions in the email that follows. The explanations put forth may or may not be true and more study is needed to verify them. ------- From: 'Colonial Families of the Eastern Shore, Vol. I, The Gale Family,' page 134. John Gale, Sr. of Kent County, Maryland, was sold 140 acres, Redmond's Supply by John Hodgson of Cecil County, Maryland, who ratified the sale in his will dated November 10, 1699. On March 19, 1725, John Sr. conveyed to his son, John Gale, Jr., 50 acres of a tract called Redmond's Supply. On May 09, 1732, Gale conveyed to his son John Gale, Jr., planter, a tract called Redmond's Supply, 250 acres. NOTE: I believe that the above mentioned John Gale of Kent Co. MD, is the same John Gale who owned land in North Carolina and left his Will in Henrico Co. VA in 1733. John Gale's Will(above) DOES state that his son lives in Kent Co., MD, pointing to the likelyhood that these two John Gales are one and the same.

The chart was obtained by Theresa Dudley Pope Stingely(dksting_681@bellsouth.net), a 4th great granddaughter of Francis 1st & Lucy Dudley Lewis, who copied it and gave it to me in late 2002. The chart shows three brothers--Henry, John and Francis Lewis--and some of their descendants through the 3rd generation.

- Text: George Lewises birth date a guesstimate on compiler's part. Three sources were used to estimate his birth date. 1. His son Henry's estimated birth date of 1737. 2. George Lewis being named as executor of John Gale's Will of 1733, which means that he would most likely be at least 21 years of age in 1733. 3. The birth of his daughter Mary on 6 Mar 1742/3 recorded in the Bristol Parish Register, VA.

Author: Reiley Kidd Periodical: Amelia County Order Books 17 & 18, June 1785 - March 1788 Publication: Amelia County Historical Society, Amelia, VA 23002 Page: 129a Detail: At a Court held for Amelia Co. on Friday, 28 April 1786; On the petition of George Lewis, he is exempt from paying taxes in the future.
- Text: No marriage record has been located for George and Catherine Lewis. The marriage date assumption of circa 1735 is based on an Amelia Co., VA land deed dated 27 Dec. 1754 whereby George Lewis deeds 'his son' Henry 100 acres of land. Henry would most probably have been at least 18 years old at the time of this deed making his birthday ca 1737, therefore George and Catherine Lewis would have been married at least by 1735.
