A “best effort” has been applied to seeking and citing source materials in the following family tree. However, there are instances where a “best guess” was made, based on incomplete documentation. Users are advised to always seek original documentation. I welcome any changes or additions to this file. (Note that given names shown in all capital letters are my direct line of ancestors.) NO POST IT NOTES, PLEASE...Send me an e-mail. Thanks, Patrick Childress.

  • ID: I1774
  • Name: Aaron OVERTON
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1733 in Onslow County, North Carolina
  • Death: 1774 in Cumberland County, North Carolina
  • Reference Number: 1774
  • Note:
ALL of the material on Aaron Overton and his descendents was furnished to this writer by Nevel Overton Slack of the "Overtons Only" website in June 2009.

Aaron Overton, born 1733, Onslow County, North Carolina. He was apprenticed April 8, 1741 to Edward Dudley for six years to learn cordwaining (shoe making). October 29, 1774, John Overton approved as guardian to John, Jesse, Moses and David, orphans of Aaron Overton, entering into bond with John Horton and Robert Cheek for 100 pounds in Moore County, North Carolina.

Virginia References: (These references might be to an earlier Aaron Overton)
1765, April 24: With John Overton and John Mizer witness to deed to Moses Overton from John Mitchell 40 Acres adjacent to Overton/Dupree.
1765, April 25: Moses and Aaron witness to deed to James Mitchell.

Burke County, Georgia and St. Georges Parish:
1768 (perhaps 66), Aaron Overton in June granted 200 acres...bounded by vacant land.
1768, October, Edmund Beard, six months in Georgia asks for 100 acres from Aaron Overton.
1774, July 5, Aaron granted 500 acres. (Source: Burke County, Georgia by Davis and Lucas 1981).

Correspondent sent stated that it was signed for by Nicolas Caverah for Aaron and others. (June 7, 1766). Policy was 100 acres for head of household and 50 acres per head in family including blacks. Thus, household head was Aaron, plus two in 1768 (presumably wife and one child) and eight by 1774 (Aaron, plus wife and six children or slaves). If this entry is Aaron from Cumberland, then the six are Jesse, John, David, Moses and maybe Amos and Aaron #2.

Note: In Cumberland County, North Carolina on August 5, 1805, Moses Overton was assignee of David Overton for 300 acres on Allison and Overton Line on McClendon Creek. Where did David get the 300 acres? Perhaps as heir to Aaron.
