Note: Made boots for sons, Charles Henry and Edward Bell, soldiers in the Civil War. C. H. wrote to his father that if he could not make a living as a shoemaker, he should try something else. In his 15 Sep 1863 letter he advised, "It seems to me now that hands are scarce and that you are a pretty good scholar that you could get into something that would pay better than shoe making." John worked at the poorhouse in Zanesville during the war years but lost this position (check date).
