  • Note:
Thanks to the research of Dr. Samuel Omar Barwick, famil y researchers of the many lines in America have the backbon e of their research. In the early 1900's, Dr. Barwick bega n his quest of tracing the family of Barwick's. In 1907 h e published his results in "History of the Barwick Family F rom 1652 to 1907". Dr. Barwick was certainly a self made m an as he was placed with strangers at the age of 7 to ear n his board and keep. When he was 24 years of age he bega n his medical training. He then practiced medicine for man y years in Elkhart Co, IN. In his later years he took up h is quest of tracing the various Barwick families and travel ed far and wide collecting material and interviewing Barwic k kin. We thank you Dr. Barwick for your remarkable life a nd drive for excellence.

Reference the Barwick and related families- Thank you to Ju dy Anderson, Dr. Allen Barwick and Robert Dan Barwick for t heir comprehensive research on the families. Also, to Gwe n Lowe Haines whose report has fallen into my possession . Thank you to many others out there who have contribute d in this project. .Others are acknowledged under the ances tor they contributed information - see notes.

William and his father William both served in the Revolutio nary War in Dobbs Co from Newbern District,NC. They were a lso members He was a member of the Hyde County, NC Militia . For their war services, both received land grants, Willia m ,the son, was granted 640 acres in Darlington District, S C on July 3, 1786. William his father received 250 acre s , all acreage located in Darlington District SC. Both Re volutionary War Vouchers are on file in the Treasurer's an d Comptrollers's Papers, Dept of Archives and History, Rale igh, NC.. In 1776, he deeded land to William Barwick Jr. a nd to John Barwick of Dobbs Co, NC. (Old Grantee Index, Ki ngston, NC for Johnson Co, NC. Barwick was sometimes spel led Berwicke. The will of William left his estate to hi s wife on Aug 31,1807. After her death their son, Noel adm inistered the estate.

The following was contributed by Robert Dan Barwick:

William and Elizabeth moved with their family and William' s parents to the Cheraw District (later Darlington Co), S C abt 1785. William was first granted land in the Cheraw Di strict in 1786. Nathan Barwick's obit states that Nathan mo ved with his parents to SC when he was a boy. Since Natha n was born in 1782, the move would have occurred between 17 82 and 1786. William appeared with Elizabeth on both the 17 90 and 1890 census. Their growing family is shown with prec isely accurate household content on both census counts. Wil liam died Aug 31, 1807 when he made one of the deathbed wil ls which characterized Colonial citizens. The will was pro ved by affidavits of James Herron, John Register and JJames Griffin. It was sworn before John Mixon, Jr.

Elizabeth continued to live in Darlington District, SC unti l her death in 1820. She was listed as head of household o n both the 1810 and 1820 census. She was dead by Aug 182 0 as Noel, her son, applied for letters of administration f or her estate on that date.

A heated controversy developed between the sons of Willia m and Elizabeth after Elizabeth's death. When William die d in 1807 he left a will which directed that his property b e first left to his wife and then to his seven youngest son s upon her death. Noel, born in 1798 and one of the seven y oungest sons, was named as executor of the estate. A compla int was filed on Jan 1, 1821 in the Court of Equity at Darl ington Courthouse alleging that Noel had refused to abide b y his father's wishes in the division of certain of the rea l property in the estate. John, William, Stephen, and Redd en were complainants and Noel and Samuel were defendants i n the action. The youngest son, Eli, born in 1804, is sai d to have died interstate and with no heirs by the date o f filing. The widow of William is also said in the complain t to have died. A hearing was held at Darlington Courthous e on the second Mon in Feb, 1821. A writ was issued to a gr oup of Darlington men consisting of Nathan Hanks, Richard I Figure Moses Waters, John Beasley and James Herron. The wri t directed that the group attempt to divide the land and fa iling such an attempt, arrange for its sale. The property w as appraised on Oct 23, 1821 and subsequently sold with clo sing in June 1822. The buyer, Edward Woodham, paid $626, th e appraisal amount for the land, in two annual installment s in April 1823 and April 1824.

The controversy over William's estate and the subsequent sa le of his land help to explain the migration of his sons fr om SC in the 1820's. The young men would have felt acrimon y and would have had money in their pockets. Nathan, Benjam in, William and Redden moved to SOUTH GEORGIA. (Redden late r would move to ALABAMA). Noel moved to MISSISSIPPI. Stephe n went to ALABAMA. The Barwick name was thus spread over a t least those states.

Descendants of the brothers moved to FLORIDA later in the n ineteenth century.
