Utah.http://www.brucerognan.com/andrew%20cypriansen.htm "The Holand [Høland] District in Akershus County, Norway is a very rich farmland. In appearance it looks much like the area of Wisconsin in Monroe and La Crosse Counties. The area of Holand [Høland] parish, Norway historically has been one of the most the most desirable farm lands in Norway. Since only 3% of Norwegian soil was tillable the area of Holand [Høland] was prime."

"Most of the emigrants entering Hull travelled via the Paragon Railway Station and from there travelled to Liverpool via Leeds, Huddersfield and Stalybridge (just outside Manchester). The train tickets were part of a package that included the steamship ticket to Hull, a train ticket to Liverpool and then the steamship ticket to their final destination - mainly America. Sometimes so many emigrants arrived at one time that there would be up to 17 carriages being pulled by one steam engine. All the baggage was stored in the rear 4 carriages, with the passengers filling the carriages nearer the front of the train. The trains took precedence over all other train services because of their length and usually left Hull on a Monday morning around 11.00 a.m., arriving in Liverpool between 2.00 and 3.00 p.m."
[A ship named the SS [Steam Ship] State of Nevada arrived in New York April 24, 1884. I looked at the 6 page manifest but no one who could be Karelius/Karl/Carl/Charles was on it. The passengers were taken on board at Glasgow & Larne. Only about 25 Norwegians were on board.]
Union Utah L.D.S. Church records: 855- Charles Anderson received 24 July 1892 from 23 Ward, Salt Lake City.
More research needed to find Charles Anderson's citizen papers. Could he be one of these? Son Oscar put 1895 as his naturalization date on the 1920 census. Norway was ruled by the King of Sweden at that time so they had to give up allegiance to Sweden. Burial info from Alan Evensen, 8 Apr 1998: Buried West Jordan City Cemetery, Salt Lake County, Utah, Plot #1, Location A (Lot 16 -Section E. Carelius Andreassen: Husband of Antonetta, born 7 Apr 1851 in Egehejen Under Tangen, Holand, Akershus, Norway, died 28 Dec 1924, age 73; changed name to "Charles Anderson" after immigrating to Salt Lake City, Utah; listed as "Cornelious Anderson" and Cornelious Andriason" on cemetery records."
Charles (Carelius or Karelius) was mistakenly called Cornelius in some L.D.S. Ancestral File records. This could have been because of his Norwegian accent. It is not known whether he could write English although the 1900 census said that he could. No letter or sample of his writing has been found by this researcher. Norwegian C or K's were interchangeable. Carelius is pronounced car'-e-lus (soft e). He was often called Carl or Karl. His daughter Annie named one of her sons Carlos [emphasis on the first sylable] which is pronounced about the same as Carelius. His son Oscar named a son Carl.

Photo of Nettie & Charles Anderson was passed down in the Allen family. Grace Allen Wells had copies made for many family members in the 1960's. A scan of this photo is in their "Family Tree Maker" marriage scrapbook. Another photo of Charles and one of Nettie are in the possession of Ed & Norma Evensen. These photos were on a family group sheet & scanned into Antonette & Charles's scrapbooks. A 4 generation photo of Oscar Anderson; Oscars's son (name unknown) holding Oscar's grandson; and Charles Anderson (aka Carelius Andreassen is also scanned into Antonette & Charles's marriage scrapbook from a photocopy of original photo.
Marriage place: the Ancestral file of the L.D.S. Church, Family History Center, has marriage taking place in Vestre Aker, Oslo, Norway. Oslo (city) was called Christiania or Kristiania until 1926.
Florence Allen Mikesell, grand-daughter of this couple, told her children that Antonette "Nettie" Evensen had been married before she married Charles and had one child from that marriage named Chris. She then married Charles, who was a fisherman, and they had other children.
Travel by steamship at this time took only two to three weeks.
Franklin K. Anderson who authored a Family Group Sheet for this family, listed sources: Info from Mrs. Clara A. Cottle; FGS by Christian Anderson; FGS by Oral Warren Anderson; West Jordan Cemetary records; Vital Statistics of Utah Dept. of Health and Temple Index Bureau.
One of the stories passed down in the family was the story below [warning, very graphic]. Florence Allen Mikesell told her family that her Aunt Hilda, when two or three years old, was ran over & killed by a train that cut her in three pieces. Florence's daughter, Leslie Mikesell Wood, searched microfilm of newspaper records until she found this story: "The Deseret News" Salt Lake City, Utah weekly newspaper, Wednesday 22 February 1888 "FRIGHTFUL ACCIDENT" "A Two - Year Old Child Cut To Pieces by the D. & R. G. W." "On Wednesday, the 8th of the present month, a shocking and fatal accident occurred at West Jordan, ten miles south of this city, by which a two - year old girl was cut in two and almost instantly killed by a D. & R. G. W. Railway train. Carl Andriason and his family have a small home at West Jordan about 50 rods west of the D. & R. G. W. station at Bingham Junction. On the afternoon of the day named, Mrs. Andriason's little daughter, Hilda Maria, was out in the yard with her mother, and started for the house, as was supposed. Instead of going inside, she went out on the street and towards the schoolhouse on the opposite side. The street is a narrow one, and in the centre is the D. & R. G. W. track to Bingham, the grade toward the river being quite heavy. The unfortunate child had not been away from her mother more than two or three minutes, when a train of three loaded ore cars and a locomotive came down the grade, backing, at about nine miles per hour. As it approached the schoolhouse two boys on the front car saw the child on the track a short distance ahead, and apparently too frightened to get from between the rails. They signaled the engineer, who applied the brakes, but almost at the same instant the first car caught the little one and threw her on the rails. The entire train passed over her body, at the hips, mangling it horribly. The accident was observed by a number of school-children, school being in session at the time, and they came trooping out and beheld a terrible scene. Mrs. Andriason came to look for her babe as soon as she discovered that it was not in the house, and got on to the street just as the train passed over it. She rushed frantically forward and grasped the child, carrying the bleeding form into the house. Then she discovered that she had picked up only the trunk of the body. One leg and the entrails were left on the track, from which other parties gathered them into a pan and conveyed them to the house. The father had left some time before for his work at a smelter. A messenger was dispatched after him, to convey the sad tidings, and it was a couple of hours before he got back to his home. In the meantime, an inquest had been held and the testimony of a number of eyewitnesses taken. The coroner's verdict is as follows: Territory of Utah, Salt Lake County, West Jordan Precinct. An inquisition holden [sic] at West Jordan, in West Jordan Precinct, Salt Lake County, on the 8th day of February, 1888, before Isaac Harrison, justice of said precinct, upon the body of Hilda Andriason, there lying dead, by the jurors whose names are hereto subscribed. The said jurors upon their oaths do say that the said Hilda Andriason was killed by cars owned by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway, and that it was purely accidental, no blame being attached to the railway employes [sic]. In testimony whereof the said jurors have herto set their hands the day and year aforesaid. Allan Hall, Joseph Mills, W. M. Bateman, Jurors. The funeral took place on Friday, February 11th. The family are plunged into grief over the terrible affair, and Mrs. Andriason is especially seriously affected. Every time a train passes the strain on her seems so great as to be beyond her powers of endurance, and the bad effects do not appear to get less as time elapses. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire settlement where they live."
