Descendant of Roger Mowbray, 1st Baron Mowbray of Axholme . Married Elizabeth, dau. of Margaret Duchess of Norfolk, b y which lady he had issue Thomas Lord Mowbray.

Probably born in 1328 [I don't think so!], and before 135 3 he had married Elizabeth, only child and heiress of Lor d Segrave. On the death of Segrave in 1353, John entered in to possession of her lands, lying chiefly in Leicestershir e where the manors of Segrave, Sileby and Mountsorrell roun ded off the Mowbray estates about Melton Mowbray. In Warwic kshire the castle and manor of Caludon, together with othe r lordships increased the Mowbray holding in that county.
In the lifetime of his father, he was involved in the wa rs with France. From 14 August 1362 to 20 Jan 1366 he was s ummoned to Parliament as "John de Mowbray of Axholme". In 1 368 he fell in a conflict with the Turks near Constantinopl e, on his way to the Holy Land, having assumed the cross an d embarked on the Crusade.
He had two sons, John and Thomas, and several daughter s of whom three have known careers.

Most likely, one of his ancestors was Geoffrey DeMowbra y and his information is listed below.
Geoffrey de Mowbray, Bishop of Coutances: from The Conquer or and His Companions - Genealogy on Pat Patterson
    DE MOWBRAY, BISHOP OF COUTANCES
    The Conqueror and His Companions
by J.R. PlanchT, Somerset Herald. London: Tinsley Brothers , 1874.
Of this unquestioned companion of the Conqueror we ha ve already heard, in conjunction with his ecclesiastical br other-in-arms, Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, by whose side he foug ht, if not at Senlac, at least on other occasions, and at w hose trial he presided when that rapacious primate was impl eaded by Lanfranc for despoiling the see of Canterbury of m uch of its property. Dugdale, apparently quoting Orderic Vi tal, says that Geoffrey, being of a noble Norman extraction , and more skilful in arms than divinity, knowing better ho w to train up soldiers than to instruct his clergy, was a n eminent commander in that signal battle near Hastings, i n Sussex.
The words of Orderic are not quite so precise as respe cts the battle; he says that the Bishop rendered essentia l service and support at it, but neither by him nor by an y other writer is it indicated that he was intrusted wit h a command in it. Wace describes him as receiving confessi ons, giving benedictions, and imposing penalties on the nig ht before the battle, but not as taking active part in th e battle itself, though, with the prelate's pugnacious prop ensities, it is almost impossible to believe he could withs tand the temptation. "The Sire de Moubrai," however, mentio ned as a combatant by the Norman poet, was Roger de Moubrai , brother of the Bishop, and father of Robert de Mowbray, E arl of
    Northumberland.
Montbrai (Moubrai) is a commune in the canton of Percy , arrondissement of St. L(. Its name was corrupted in Engla nd into Mowbray, which, after its assumption by the famil y of Albini, I need scarcely observe, became one of the nob lest in England. Bishop Geoffrey appears to have preferre d the name of St. L( to that of Montbrai, and we find him t herefore described as De Sancto Laudo and St. Loth. The fir st time we hear of him after the battle is at the coronatio n of William in Westminster Abbey, when, "at the instigatio n of the Devil," says the pious Orderic, an unforeseen occu rrence, pregnant with mischief to both nations and an ome n of future calamities, suddenly occurred. For when Aldred , the Archbishop,
demanded of the English, and Geoffrey, Bishop of Coutances , of the Normans, whether they consented to have William fo r their King, and the whole assembly with one voice, thoug h not in one language, shouted assent, the men-at-arms on g uard outside the Abbey, hearing the joyful acclamations o f the people within in a language they did not understand , suspected some treachery, and rashly set fire to the neig hbouring houses.
The flames spreading, the congregation, seized wit h a panic, rushed to the doors in order to make their escap e, and a scene of the utmost confusion ensued, during whic h the ceremony of the coronation was with difficulty comple ted by the trembling clergy, the mighty Conqueror himself b eing seriously alarmed, not so much for his life as for th e evil effects of this untoward event upon his new subjects.
In 1069, when the West Saxons of Dorset and Somerset m ade an attack on Montacute, Bishop Geoffrey, at the head o f the men of London, Winchester, and Salisbury, fell upon t hem by surprise and routed them, putting many to the swor d and miserably mutilating the prisoners. In 1071 he was ap pointed to represent the King at the trial of Bishop Odo, o n the complaint of the Archbishop of Canterbury, as alread y mentioned; and three years later we find him again in arm s beside that same Odo, marching to suppress the rebellio n of the Earls of Hereford and Norfolk, and for these and o ther
services he was rewarded by the Conqueror with "two hundre d and eighty vills, which are commonly called manors."
An assistant at the coronation of the Conqueror, he wa s in attendant at his funeral, and died on the 2nd of Febru ary, 1093-4, leaving his large domains in England to his ne phew, Robert, Earl of Northumberland, son of his brother, R oger de Moubrai, who fought at Senlac, but of whom, strang e to say, there appears no trace whatever of any benefit ac cruing to him for his services in that important
action. His son, Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumberland , having joined in the conspiracy against William Rufus i n 1095, was taken prisoner, and languished, we are told, th irty years in a dungeon at Windsor. Orderic describes him a s distinguished for his great power and wealth, his bold sp irit and military daring causing him to hold his fellow nob les in contempt, and being inflated with empty pride, he di sdained obedience to his superiors. In person he was of gre at stature, size, and strength, of a dark complexion, and c overed with hair. He was bold, but at the same time crafty . His features were melancholy and harsh. He reflected mor e than he tallied, and scarcely ever smiled when he was
    speaking.
It does not appear clearly by whom Robert de Mowbray w as made Earl of Northumberland. After the beheading of Walt heof, -- one of the worst of the many infamous acts of Will iam the Conqueror, -- in 1075, the government of the provin ce appears to have been confided to Walcher, Bishop of Durh am, who was murdered during a popular commotion in 1079. Th e earldom was then, it would seem, conferred on one Alberic , a Norman by birth, of whom a strange story is told. Bein g a person of great authority, and not satisfied with his o wn condition, he consulted the Devil, and was told that h e should possess Greece. Whereupon he made a voyage into th at country; but when the Greeks understood that his objec t was to reign over them, they despoiled him of all that h e had with him, and expelled him the realm. Wearied with tr avel he returned to Normandy, where King Henry gave him a n oble widow in marriage, and the priest at the altar askin g the woman, whose name was Gracia, "Wilt thou have this ma n?" the bridegroom was suddenly made aware of the illusio n of the Evil one, --
"Keeping the word of promise to the ear
To break it to the hope."
If there be any truth in the fact of the marriage in the re ign of Henry I, apart from the legendary portion of the sto ry, how could Robert de Mowbray be Earl of Northumberland i n the time of William the Conqueror, or even of his son Ruf us?
As late as 1088 (1st of Rufus), Geoffrey, Bishop of Co utances, witnesses the charter of foundation of St. Mary' s at York as Governor of the earldom: "Eo tempore Northymbr orum Consulatum regebat," -- an office which we have seen s tated to have been held by Walcher, Bishop of Durham, afte r the judicial murder of Waltheof, and previous to the gif t of the earldom to Alberic. The latter may have either res igned or forfeited the earldom when he left England on hi s Grecian expedition, and Bishop Geoffrey held the governme nt of the county until his death in 1093, when his nephew R obert, succeeding to all his vast estates, was probably adv anced to the dignity of Earl of Northumberland by Rufus. A t any rate, I have not been able to arrive at any nearer ap proach to the fact.
The wife of this Robert was Matilda, daughter of Riche r de l'Aigle, by his wife Judith, sister of Hugh, Earl of C hester. Orderic informs us that their union took place onl y three months before his insurrection, and that she was th erefore early deprived of her husband, and long exposed t o deep suffering, as during his life she could not, accordi ng to the law of God, marry again. At length by licence o f Pope Paschal, before whom the case was laid by learned pe rsons, after a long period Nigel de Albini took her to wife . Of her treatment by him we shall discourse hereafter. I h ave only mentioned the fact here as affecting the date of t he dissolution of the marriage, Paschal II having succeede d to the chair of St. Peter, 15th June 1099, and dying 21s t June 1118.
Orderic Vital says in his 7th Book, that Robert de Mow bray was detained in captivity by Rufus and his brother Hen ry for nearly thirty-four years, living to an advanced age , without having any children. In his 8th Book, he reduce s the term to thirty years, adding that "he grew old whil e paying the penalty of his
crimes." Admitting the shortest period, his death could no t have occurred before 1125. Dugdale, who gives the earlie r date of 1106, with the addition of the statement of his b eing shorn a monk at St. Albans, takes not the slightest no tice of these contradictions. His reference is to Vincent' s "Discoverie of
Brooke's Errors;" but if it be an error of Brooke, who quot es no authority for his statement, Vincent has not correcte d him, which he would have been too happy to do had it bee n in his power. The difference between eleven years and thi rty, or four-and-thirty, is rather an important one; bu t I have been unable as yet to light upon any fact which wo uld decide the question, which is only important in this in quiry as bearing upon another -- was he old enough in 106 6 to be present at Hastings with his father Roger, "the Sir e de Molbrai" of Wace, and therefore entitled to be include d amongst the companions of the Conqueror? If so, he must h ave been close upon fifty at the time of his marriage, and , according to
Orderic, an octogenarian at that of his death.

DO NOT TAKE THIS WORK AS GOSPEL. This is the work of many people. Be very careful about those with no dates. Several of the families have different spellings for the same name. I had to cut the posted tree to only my ancestors as it is too big to post it all. (count started 22 Nov 2010) free counters
