    BARONY of TATESHAL (I)

    ROBERT DE TATESHAL, son and heir, born 5 December 1248. H e was summoned for service in Wales in 1277, 1282, 1283, 12 87 and was campaigning there in 1294-95. On 28 June 1283 h e was summoned to attend the Assembly to be held at Shrewsb ury on 30 September. He was summoned to a military Counci l at Gloucester in 1287, and for service in Scotland, 1291 , 1296, 1297 and 1298; and he was going to Gascony on the K ing's service in 1294. He was summoned to Parliament from 2 4 June 1295 to 26 January 1296/7, by writs directed Robert o de Tateshal, whereby he is said to have become LORD TATES HAL. In December 1296 he was invited to the wedding of th e Count of Flanders and the King's daughter, Elizabeth. Sid ing with the King against the Barons in 1297, he was appoin ted to aid the sheriffs of Norfolk and Suffolk in arrestin g evildoers and to negotiate with the clergy, 1 March; wa s summoned for service in Flanders (where he was represente d by his son), 15 May, to a Council in London, 9 September , and to be in London under arms, 16 September; and was app ointed a Commissioner to enforce peace between the Cinque P orts and Yarmouth and to restore order in Yarmouth, 6 and 1 1 September 1297. He was going to Rome with Hugh de Vere o n the King's business, March 1297/8; and fought (with his s on and 7 lances) in the vangmacrd at the battle of Falkirk , 22 July 1298. He married, perhaps before 1268, Joan, 2n d daughter and coheir of Ralph FITZRANULF (or FITZRANDOLF) , of Middleham, Yorks, by Anastasia, daughter of William D E PERCY. He died shortly before 8 September 1298, aged 49 . His widow died shortly before 1 April 1310. [Complete Pee rage XII/1:650-1, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
