Note: RICHARD DE CLARE brother and heir of Gilbert de C. was so n of Thomas de C., Lord of Thomond in Connaught, by Julian , daughter and heir of Sir Maurice FITZ-MAURICE, Lord justi ce of Ireland. He had livery of his brother Gilbert's land s 30 January 1307/8. He was summoned to Parliament 26 Octob er 1309, but never afterwards, by writ directed Ricardo d e Clare, whereby he is held to have become LORD CLARE. He m arried, Joan, who survived him and was living 20 April 1322 . He died 7 June 1318 as it is said in battle at Dysert i n Ireland, leaving Thomas de Clare, his only chiId and heir , who died unmarried and a minor, when any hereditary baron y ,which may be supposed to have been created by the writ o f 1309 became extinct. Bunratty Castle continued to be attacked by the O'Briens an d the MacNamaras, and there were even battles between the N ormans themselves, often allied to Irish factions. For th e Normans, the end came in 1318, when the Irish met them a t the ferocious battle of Dysert O'Dea. The Normans were co mpletely routed, and Sir Thomas's son, Richard, killed, wit h many of the knights and followers. When news of the death of her husband reached de Clare' s wife, she immediately set fire to the castle and the town , fled to her ships lying ready in the Shannon estuary, an d set sail for England.
