Note: He was Duke of Bedford. His mother was the dowager Queen of England and a daughte r of the King of France. Jasper was a half-brother of Kin g Henry VI and brother of Edward Tudor, the father of Henr y VII. Jasper Tudor (ca 1431- December 1495) was the uncle of Kin g Henry VII of E ngland and the architect of his successfu l conquest of England and Wales in 1485. Jasper was the thi rd son of Owen Tudor and the former queen Katherine of Valo is, widow of King Henry V. Hence he was a half-brother to K ing Henry VI, who, on attaining his majority, created Jaspe r Earl of Pembroke (some time in 1452 or 1453). Although th ere was uncertainty as to whether Jasper and his two (or th ree) brothers were legitimate, their parents' probably secr et marriage not being recognised by the authorities, he enj oyed all the privileges appropriate to his birth until 1461 , when he was subject to an attainder for supporting King H enry VI against the Yorkists who eventually deposed him.
Jasper was an adventurer whose military expertise, some o f it gained in the early stages of the Wars of the Roses, w as considerable. He remained in touch with Margaret of Anjo u, queen of Henry VI, as she struggled to regain her son' s inheritance, and he held Denbigh Castle for the Lancastri ans. He also brought up his nephew, Henry Tudor, whose fath er had died before his birth, until 1461 when custody was t aken over by William Herbert. Following the return of the Y orkist king Edward IV from temporary exile in 1471, Jaspe r took the teenage Henry with him into exile, this time i n Brittany. It was thanks to him that Henry acquired the ta ctical awareness that made it possible to defeat the far mo re experienced Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field . On Henry's accession in 1485, Jasper was restored to al l his former titles, including Knight of the Garter. He wa s created Duke of Bedford and married the former Katherin e Woodville, sister of Queen Elizabeth Woodville and wido w of the Duke of Buckingham. In 1488, he took possession o f Cardiff Castle. He died in December, 1495, and was burie d at Keynsham Abbey in Somerset.
