Reference the book "Amherst County, Virginia In the Re volution", by Lenora Higginbotham Sweeny, page 56:
Richard Gatewood is listed among Captain William Tucker's C ompany of Militia in January of 1781.
Also noted in the same book is the observation by Mrs. Swee ny that the families of Gatewood, Penn, Josling, Higginboth am, Evans, Whittle, Powell, Patton, Taliferro, and others a ll lived in the area of Amherst County, Virginia that was l ater sectioned off to become the new Nelson County.
