Note: Bethoc (Beatrix, Beatrice) MacKenneth, Princess of Scotland , born 984 at Atholl, Perth, Scotland; date of death is unc ertain. Bethoc was the eldest daughter of King Malcolm II o f Alba (Scotland), who had no sons. The strongest hereditar y claim of succession to the Scottish throne therefore pass ed through Bethoc.
Approximately 1000CE, Princess Bethoc married Crinan the Th ane de Mormaer (Earl) of Dunkeld. The first son of this mar riage was Duncan Cæn-Mohr MacCrinan, who ascended to the th rone of Scotland in 1034.
Early writers have asserted that Malcolm II also designate d Duncan as his successor under the rules of tanistry becau se there were other possible claimants to the throne.
