Arnoul was the 29th. Bishop of Metz, in 612. He was canoniz ed by the Church, Saint Arnoul. He became the Mayor of th e Palace of Austrasia, and tutor ofDagobert. In the year 61 4, when Clotaire II had had Brunehaut killed, he remained t he only descendant of the sons of Clovis alive. But he is o nly a toy in the hands of the Franc aristocracy both lay an d ecclesiastic. At the head of eachof the three ancient kin gdoms, Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy, the Major Domus [M ayor of the Palace] gains progressively greater importance . On 18 October 614, Clotaire II signed the Edict of Pari s which in 27 articles, essentially formed the basic powe r structure for the Council of Bishops and the Assembly o f the Greats [nobles].
In 623, Clotaire II was pushed by the Bishop of Metz andals o Pepin [Le Vieux de Landen] , the Mayor of the Palace to g ive Austrasia its own King. Thus, Clotaire II's son Dagober t became King of Austrasia and underthe tutelage of Arnoul.

Bishop and member of the court of the Frankish king Theodeb ert II of Austrasia, sometimes called Arnuiph or Arnulf o f Metz. A noble, Arnulf married Doda, and their son was Ans egisel. Ansegisel married Beggia, the daughter of Pepin o f Landen, starting the Carolingian dynasty of France. Dod a became a nun, and Arnulf made plans to enter a monaster y but was named the bishop of Metz around 616. He continue d his court services, making Clotaire of Neustria the kin g of Austrasia. He also served as counselor to Dagobert, Ki ng Clotaire's son. In 626, Arnulf retired to a hermitage a t Remiremont, France.
