Mayor of the palace (680-714) of the Frankish territory o f Austrasia; grandson of Pepin of Landen and father of Char les Martel. After defeating the nobles of Neustria at the b attle of Tertry (687), Pepin made himself mayor, or ruler , of all the Frankish kingdoms except Aquitaine, with the M erovingian dynasty retaining the nominal kingship. He defea ted the Frisians, the Alemanni, and the Bavarians and estab lished a strong government, thus laying the foundation fo r the empire of his descendants, the Carolingian mayors an d kings.

Pippin of Herstal (Fr. Pépin), also known as Pippin the You nger, (b. 635 or 640 - December 16, 714). He was the gran dson of Pippin the Elder from the marriage of Ansegisel an d Begga, the daughter of the Elder. As the Mayor of the Pal ace of Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy from 680 to 714, h e gradually controlled the Frankish court. The Merovingia n king Theuderic III attempted to oust Pepin from his post , but he was defeated at Tertry in 687. Pepin then became t he actual ruler of Austrasia, keeping a strong influence ov er the other Frankish kingdoms. His descendants continued t o serve as Mayors of the Palace, eventually becoming the le gal rulers of the Frankish kingdoms. Around 670, Pippin I I married Plectrude for her inheritance of substantial esta tes in the Moselle region. They produced at least two child ren and through them at least two significant grandchildren . These legitimate children and grandchildren claimed thems elves to be Pepin's true successors and with the help of hi s widow Plectrude tried to maintain the position of Mayor o f the Palace after Pepin II's death on December 16 714. How ever, Charles Martel, Pippin's son by his mistress, Alpaid a (or Chalpaida), had gained favour among the Austrasians , primarily for his military prowess and ability to keep th em well supplied with booty from his conquests. Despite th e efforts of Plectrude to silence her rival's child by impr isoning him, he became the sole Mayor of the Palace and d e facto ruler of Francia. Children Married Plectrude ar ound 670 (Children yet to be allocated) Drogo (c. 695-708 ) Grimoald II (d. 714) Childebrand (d. 751) Mistress Apaid a or Chalpaida Charles Martel, the Hammer (August 23 67 6 - October 22 741)

Born: circa 635 in Liege, Luik, Liege, Belgium, son of Anse gis=Ansegisus, Duke d'Austrasie and Sainte Begge=Begga de L anden . Note - between 679 and 714: The services of the Pal ace were ensured by the Greats [nobles], known as "Optimate s", frequently brought up at a very young age within the Ki ng's entourage. Because the Canerarii's task was to watch o ver the King's chamber and the precious treasure kept in it , it was logical that he should be given financial attribut es. Since the eldest officer was the seneschal [senescallus ] he was given the task of overseeing the army. The Comes S tabuli' job was to watch over the King's stables. There wer e others based on various tasks. The most singularoffice wa s that of Major Domus, frequently called Mayor of the Palac e. Originally, this was only an attendant whose job was t o maintain appropriate levels of stocks and supplies, and t o coordinate the activities of other personnel in the King' s palace. In early 679, Dagobert II,who had returned form a n exile in Ireland, attempted to govern Austrasia with th e help of his Mayor of the Palace, Goufaud. The Greats pref er Pepin II, grand-son of Pepin de Landen. By the end of 67 9, DagobertII is killed in a hunting "accident". Pepin II w as the Mayor-of-the-Palace of Austrasie from 679 to 714. I n 680, Ebroin and Thierry III of Neustria fight and force P epin II to flee at Leucofao, near Bois-du-Fay in the Ardenn es. When Pepin II recognizes Thierry III as the only King o f Gaule, the war between the two is suspended for about 3 y ears. At Tertry three leagues from Saint-Quentin, Pepin I I fought and beat Thierri III, King of Neustrie and in 68 7 took that kingdom. It is at that time that he begins to b e known as Pepin de Herstal or d'Heristal. It is also clea r that by that time, the office of Major Domus had become e ssentially hereditary and that it grew in power as that o f the King's declined. Pepin II directed a number of expedi tions against the Frisons [defeating Duke Radbod in 689 an d sending them Willibrod to convert them to Christianity] , the Alamanians [whom he defeats near Lake Constance in 69 0] and the Bavarois [who submitted to Pepin II in 691] . Wh en Norbert, Mayor of Neustria and of Burgundy died [whom Pe pin II had designated in 688], circa 700, Pepin installed h is own son, Grimoald=Grimaud. Married before 685: Plectru d d'Echternach, daughter of Hugobert=Humbert d'Echternach a nd Irmina. Married before 686: Aupais=Alpaide. Historians r ecognize Alpais as Pepin II's one concubine, which seems ra ther modest for a personage of his status at that time. Die d: on 16 Dec 714 in Jupile-sur-Meuse, Belgium.
