Thomas Jewell was probably born in England, not far from th e year 1600. We have been unable positively to connect hi m with any European family; but various circumstances coinc ide to render it most likely that he was from the same ori ginal stock as Bishop John Jewell, who was born in the nor th of Devonshire in 1522, and died in 1571. Thi s "Mount," was MT. Wollaston; first settled in 1525, and na med from Capt. Wollaston; incorporated as Braintree in 1640 ; Quincy was set off in 1792, and Randolph in 1793. The t ract was laid to Boston by the General Court or Legislature , in 1634; and Dec. 11th of that year the inhabitants afte r a lecture chose seven man who should divide these lands t o those that might improve them, at the rate of 4 acres t o each person in the family; gratuitously to citizens of Bo ston, and for three shillings per acre to others. Thus w e find, "24th day, 12th Mo., 1640. Granted to Henry Adams ( a progenitor of the President,) for 10 heads, 40 acres, upo n the same covenant of three shillings per acre."

JEWELL Thomas Jewell (1 ) immigrant ancestor was born in Eng. about 1600; came ove r in ship "Planter" in April 1635; he gave his age as 27 o n ship's register. He settled at Mount Wollaston, now Brain tree, Mass., and was granted land there for 3 heads, (12 ac res) upon the covenant of 3shillings per acre, Apr. 24, 163 9. He died 1654; his will was proved July 21,1654, bequeath ing to his wife and children. Administration was granted t o Grisell, his widow. Oct. 5, 1655, she being about to marr y Humphrey Griggs; Wm. Needham and Thos. Foster were appt . executors and Griggs agreed to bring up theJewell childre n. She was soon left again a widow and was appt. administra trixof Humphrey Griggs, Aug. 18, 1657. She married afterwar ds John Gurney, Sr., Henry Kibbe, and John Burge.
