    Immigrant William Armistead came to Virginia about 1635 an d settled in Elizabeth City. According to Stella Hardy in h er book COLONIAL FAMILIES of the SOUTHERN STATES of AMERICA , William Armistead, the emigrant and progenitor of this fa mily in Virginia, came to the Colony about 1635. He was th e son of Anthony and Frances (Thompson) Armistead of Kirk D eigton in York Co, England, and received a patent for 450 a cres of land in Elizabeth City Co VA in 1636. Later he reci eved another patent for land in Gloucester Co VA.

    On July 7, 1636 he patented 450 acres in Elizabeth city, Vi rginia. His estate named Hesse.
