The site of Dudley Castle lay abandoned after it was destro yed by Henry II when Gervase de Paynel supported the uprisi ng of Prince Henry. In the mid-thirteenth century Roger Som ery began to rebuild. He died in 1272 before the works wer e anything like complete, and they were carried on by his s on, John, said to have been one of the most hated feudal lo rds in the west Midlands.
