Name: Mary Whitney
Birth: ABT 1730
Mary who married an ELKINS was in Winston (Barnwell) Co., SC 1776 - 1787.
One of Mary's sons, Shadrack, filed for a Rev. Penison in 1830 while living in Posey Co., IN. Apparently, the pension was filed with the County, but never filed with federal government. From this application Shadrack lists the following information. . . b. Edgecombe Co., NC ca 1750, 1776 living on Broad River near edge of NC. After war, lived in SC, KY, IN.
Joshua ELKINS, another son of Mary Whitney Elkins, states in his Rev. Pension application that he lived in Winston Co., SC when he enlisted.
You have Whitneys in Pendleton District, SC during the 1800 Census. John, Joshua, and Shadrack Elkins were also here during this time period.
Samuel Whitney born ca. 1615 in England, will proven 1674 in Bermuda. There is a chapter in "Some Southern Colonial Families Vol. 5" about Samuel. There is also an interesting item on who his father maybe but they hadn't proven it yet when the book was printed. They make a good arguement that the father of Samuel was Capt. Francis Whitney who died in Bermuda in 1619 from injuries when the mast of his ship broke in a storm. They infer that Capt. Francis was an Army Capt. not a sea Capt.. It's thought the ship "Garland" was transporting prisoners to VA so that's why he was onboard to take charge of them. It is know he held two shares in the Virginia Company for the trip so it's quite likely he had his family with him and was going to stay in VA when he got there.
