THE ANTECEDENTS AND DESCENDANTS OF NOAH WHIPPLE OF THE ROGERENE COMMUNITY AT QUAKERTOWN, CT, By Clara Hammond McGuigan. Published by John M. Kingsbury, Ten Snyder Heights, Ithaca, NY. page 30. John Whipple was born in England, probably in Bocking, now called Barking, County Essex in 1617. He came to America with Isreal Stoughton in 1631 probably in the ship "Mary & John". He died in Providence, RI May 16, 1685. He married in Dorchester, Mass. in 1636 Sarah______ born 1624 and died 1666. In 1641, he and his wife united with the church in Dorchester, MA. He was a carpenter by trade and owned a house and 500 acres of land near Neponset village. In 1658, he sold his house and land to James Minot and removed to Rhode Island, settling in Providence. July 27, 1659, he was received as a purchaser at Providence. The records do not state why John Whipple left Massachusetts. His children married into families whose views coinceided with those of Roger Williams. It is recorded that he even preached himself. Capt. John Whipple lived in Proidence about twenty-six years. His wife died in 1666 leaving him with several small children. He died May 16, 1685 and he and his wife were first buried in their garden lot near their house. Later, their bodies were reinterred at the North Burial Place. This burial ground was establoished in 1700 but no records were kept until 1848. I visited the burial ground as did several of my cousins and looked for their graves without success. Finally, Grace Whipple Weis, one of his descendants, with the help of the office force and an old sketch of the North Burial Ground and some other records, successed in locating their graves. The graves are located in the Whipple Burial Yard on Eastern Avenue. The Whipple plot is found by going out Eastern Avenue until the Temple monunent is reached on the left. The plot is about fifty feet northwest of this monument and the graves of Capt. John Whipple and his wife Sarah are located on Dehlia Path. The stones are well preserved. In Menory of Capt. John Whipple, who was born in England and died in Providence, The 16th day of May A.D. 1685, About 68 years of age. In Memory of Mrs. Sarah Whipple, Wife of Capt. John Whiple, She was born in Dorchester, in New England and died in Providence A.D. 1666, Aged about 42 years.
