  • ID: I17
  • Name: Hans Henrich ZELLER
  • Nickname: John Henry Zeller/Henry Sellers
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 17 AUG 1704 in Möttgers,Hesse,Germany
  • Death: Aft 13 MAR 1773 in Rockingham County,Virginia 1
  • Note:
DEATH: The exact date or even year of Heinrich's death is unknown though it can be determined that it was after March 13, 1773, but prior to August 1776.
On March 13, 1773, Heinrich sold/gave to his son, Adam Sellers, property located in then-Augusta County (present-day Rockingham County, Virginia). Jacob Nicholas, assumed to be Heinrich's son-in-law, and Augustine Price, potentially another son-in-law, attested to the sale as witnesses. However, the deed of sale was not delivered to the Augusta County Court for recording until August 1776 by Heinrich's son, John Sellers, who was a Justice of the Peace for the German community at that time. Why the delay for the delivery of the document is unknown, however, a couple of reasons can be guessed. First, it's possible that Heinrich (Henry) deeded the land to son Adam while alive and in place of an actual will. Adam held onto the deed until Heinrich's death, presumably in the latter half of 1776. Or, second, deeds, transactions, etc. at that time still had to be sent to England for final approval and signatures since it was prior to the Revolutionary War and prior to America's independence from England. Thus, Heinrich sold/conveyed the land to Adam on March 13, 1773, shortly before his death, and the transaction wasn't recorded in then Augusta County until it had returned with the proper signatures from England. This process often took 2-3 years to complete. Thus, Heinrich signed/sold it over to Adam on March 13, 1773, and it took until August 1776 for the document to return from England and to be recorded in the local court. Mention of Heinrich in the local records ends after this August 1776 entry. As such, Heinrich date of death was after March 13, 1773, but prior to August 1776.

TRANSACTIONS: After arriving in Philadelphia from Germany on September 16, 1738, aboard the ship "Queen Elizabeth", Henry and family do not appear again until he begins purchasing land in present-day Rockingham County, Virginia, in 1749. The area in which the family settled, between McGaheysville and Elkton, was considered Augusta County until Rockingham County was carved from it in 1778. Thus, Henry's land deeds, purchases, and transactions all appear in the records of Augusta County, Virginia, even though they were in what is now Rockingham County, Virginia.
The earliest known mention of Henry being in Virginia was April 8, 1749 when 200 acres owned by John Hetrick (Hedrick) was surveyed and described as "joining Paul Hayn's bottom down to HENRY SELLERS. John Hedrick's granddaughter, Mary Magdalene Hedrick, married Henry Sellers' grandson, also named Henry Sellers, in 1789 in Rockingham County, Virginia.
