SOULE; English, Dweller at or near a muddy pond.

He was orphaned when fire destroyed his home. He was brought up by his brother Robert SOULE of Selter Co. He came on the MAYFLOWER as a teacher to Edward WINSLOW's children.

He was on the 1633 Freeman's list. He was a volunteer in the Pequot War and in 1642 was a deputy for Duxbury. He was a signer of the Cape Cod compact. He was taxed in 1633/34 and independent of Winslow had removed to Duxbury bef. 1643.

George SOULE, Miles STANDISH and John ALDEN laid out the first town, Duxbury, and are buried there.

He was Deputy to the General Court from Duxbury. He was a representative 1645 and some yrs. later, an orig. propr. of Bridgewater as in 1652 he had been among the purch. of Dartmouth.

In 1668 he gave estate in Middleborough to John Haskins and Francis Walker who were his sons-in-law m. to respectively, Patience and Elizabeth.

He is buried in Duxbury. Or, he died "shortly before 1 February 1680.

with a codicil dated 20 September 1677. It was proved 1679, named his sons Nathaniel, George and John and his daughters Elizabeth, Patience, Susannah and Mary. He also had sons Zachariah and Benjamin who predeceased him. MF3, with its necessary Addendum, gives his first five generations. The Soule family history compiled by Gideon T. Ridlon is not reliable.
