    In Mount Auburn Cemetery files is found a letter written to them by John Franklin Botume on his letterhead. Under his name appears:
    Vocal Culture and Singing
    Boston Teaching Room
    226 Tremont St, Room 51

    He dates this letter Boston, April 30, 1897.
    It is signed in his own hand.

    He has put a line through the following which are still readable.

    On the L side of the letterhead: New York
    The American Academy
    of the
    Dramatic Arts

    Boston Public Library sent me pg. 274 of the 1917 Boston Directory containing the City Directory of the Citizens, Business Directory and Street Directory etc.:

    The following applies to his grandfather and father:
    "List of Persons whose Names Have Been Changed in Massachusetts 1780-1892" Under the title and in parenthesis it reads "Collated and Published by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, under Authority of Chapter 249 of the Acts of the Year 1884." Boxton: Wright & Potter Printing Company, State Printers, 1885.

    Page 112 reads "An act to change the Names of the Persons therein mentioned. Be it enacted etc., as follows: . . . . John Bottum may take the name of John Botume, also John Bottum, jun., minor son of John Bottum, may take the name of John Botume, jun.,. . . ." The list continues on to page 116 where it finishes "And the several persons before named, from and after the passing of this act, shall be known and called by the names which, by this act, they are respectively allowed to assume as aforesaid, and the names shall hereafter be considered as their only proper and legal names. April 16, 1846."

    In this year he is listed as the informant on the death certificate of his aunt, Elizabeth Hyde Botume and it gives Boston as his residence.

    His address is taken from "Order for Interment in the Cemetery of Mount Auburn" which he signed for the burial of his aunt above.

    His obituary obtained sent by the Boston Public Library and copied from the Boston Evening Transcript,Thursday, October 18, 1917 issue, reads as follows:
    "BOTUME--In this city, suddenly, October 17, John Franklin Botume, 61 years. Services at 320 Chestnut Street, West Newton, Saturday Oct. 20, at 2:45 p.m. Carriages will meet 2:05 train from Boston"

    Taken from "Order for Interment in the Cemetery of Mount Auburn" his age 61 yrs 10 mos 26 days. It was signed by his sister, Mattie Botume Alley.

    At his death, he was proprietor of the cemetery lot.

    Harvard University sent me the copies of four obituaries "Harvard College Library Clipping Sheet 1917" He died on a Wednesday. He had retired from his position, of almost twenty years, as choirmaster with St. James Episcopal Church in Roxbury, about a year prior to his death. He had continued teaching up to the time of his death. His studio was in Huntington Chambers. "As a younger man, Mr. Botume sang in public, as a member of quartets. He was a bachelor. He had studied for many years under one of Boston's celebrated masters of the voice, the late Vincenzo Cirillo."
