  • Note:
Matthew was a confederate soldier known as the "Fighting Quartermaster." He was deeply religious, always carrying a bible in his pocket, which saved his life during war when it stopped a bullet which would have killed him. Captain Pilcher was also very active in Immanuel Baptist Church of Nashville and Superintendant of its Sunday School for 25 years. He was instrumental in starting numerous Baptist Church congregation in Nashville. He was on the City Council and President of the Nashville Real Estate Exchange.

One example of his active duty reputation is noted in the OFFICIAL RECORDS: Series 1, vol 38, Part 3 (The Atlanta Campaign), pp 711-12:
"Brigade commanders have my thanks and commendation for courage, zeal, and efficiency. The staff with me on the field were: Major Ingram, assistant adjutant-general; Major Vaulx, assistant inspector-general; Captain M. B. Pilcher, assistant quartermaster; Mr. Abbot Robertson, and Frank Porterfield, volunteers from Major-General Cheatham's personal staff. The large experience of some and high gallantry and promptness of all these were of great aid to me in the movements and management of the command.
I feel it due to say in behalf of the division as a whole that all orders upon them were executed with the cheerfulness of patriots and steadiness of veterans.
List of casualties have been furnished, and accompanying reports of brigade commanders are referred to for minute particulars.

    Very respectfully,

    GEO. MANEY,
    Brigadier-General, Commanding.

    Captain BUCK,
    Assistant Adjutant-General.
