From the Wayne County Democrat, 27 Oct. 1886: Death of Peter Christy Peter Christy, a well known and respected citizen of Wayne county, has departed this life. He died at his home in Cedar Valley, six miles northwest of Wooster, on last Thursday evening, aged 77 years. His disease was cholera morbus, added to general impairment of physical powers. His wife preceded him to the grave. The funeral took place last Sabbath at Cedar Valley Church, and was largely attended by the community. The exercises were conducted there by Rev. Patterson and Rev. Dr. Speers, after which the remains were conveyed to Wooster cemetery for interment.
From unidentified newspaper: Thursday evening, October 21st, 1886, died at the residence of his son Mr. S. Wilson Christy, Peter Christy, at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 2 days. Mr. Christy was born in Fayette Co., Pa., in 1810, and at the age of 12 years removed to this county with his father, who settled on land now known as the Michael Mower farm, in Chester township, in which township he has resided for sixty-four years. He was one of a family of nine sons and daughters, all of whom have gone before him to the other shore, with the exception of two. Mr. Robert Christy, Chester township, and Mrs. Martha Smalley, Ashland, Co. Mr. Christy was united in marriage Feb. 27th 1840, to Miss Margaret Hardy, daugher of David Hardy, Chester tp., and had a family of four sons and two daughters, of whom three sons, S. Wilson and David O. of Chester tp., this county, and Lyman R. of Meridian, Kansas, and Mrs. Q.J. wife of Mr. Geo. Hutton, of this city, survive. Mrs. Christy died Feb. 7th, 1877, being preceded by her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Myers, and followed by her son Alexander of Tiffin, O. about two years ago. Mr. Christy with his wife joined the Presbyterian church of Wooster the year subsequent to their marriage, Rev. Wm. McCondlish being the pastor. In 1852 he was influential in organizing Chester church, with which they united, and Mr. Christy was chosen a Ruling Elder, which office he held until removed by the summons of the Master the last, but one, of the organisers of the congregation in which he took an untiring interest to the end, being engaged in business of the church when stricken down by the illness which ended fatally. Mr. Christy was of a cheerful disposition, energetic in business, and strictly temperate in habit, qualities which were rewarded as they usually are by an honorable competence in his declining years. The news of his death came as a shock to many of his numerous friends, for he had been around amongst us in his usual way but a few days before the end, living to the last, up to the maxim of his life. "Then what thy thoughts design to do, That let thy hands with might pursue; Since no device nor work is found, Nor wisdom underneath the ground." The funeral services was conducted by Rev. Patterson, of Chester, and Rev. Speer, of Wooster, in the Chester church, on Sunday, Oct. 24th, and the remains were followed by a large procession of mourning friends and neighbors to their last resting place in Wooster cemetery.
