Robert is believed to be the oldest child of John and Mary Ann Stevenson. He was one of the four males under 16 as shown on the 1790 census of Mecklenburg Co. NC. It is estimated he was about 12 at that time. It is not known where or when he married Margaret Chestnut. Margaret's family was living in Chester Co. SC just across the line from Mecklenburg Co., NC. If Robert went to KY when his father went to Pendleton Dist. SC that was in 1803 when Robert would have been about 25. He probably married Margaret before leaving with his younger brother, John Jr., and Margaret's parents, Alexander and Sarah Meek Chestnut.
Robert Stevenson was in Christian Co. KY (Late Todd Co) by 1810 when he bought from the estate of his father-in-law, Alexander Chestnut. Deed records and tax lists indicate that Robert lived on Elkfork of Red River. The tax records are not complete as Robert did not appear on a tax list until 1819 when he was taxed on 700 acres on Little River and 404 acres in Fraziers Co., 97th Regt. There was a Robert Stephenson in Christian Co. as early as 1798 & 1799 so one of the above could have been him. The one in Fraziers Co. is probably not our Robert Stevenson as other family members were in the same location. In 1820 & 1821 the Robert on Little River appeared again and also had land in Ohio, so he is not ours. This was now Todd Co. which was created out of Christian Co. in 1819.
Deed Book C, page 54, dated 17 Jan 1824 - Robert Stephenson for $1200 bought from Jane Broaddus, 142 acres & 10 acres on Elk Ford of Red River. This is in the same location as other Stevensons, Coulters and Chestnuts. Robert & Margaret sold part of this land in 1829. Margaret Stevenson, widow of Robert, sold more land in 1835.
Robert died in KY in 1831 as the inventory and sale of his estate was listed 5 Oct 1831. Alexander C. Stevenson [his son] was administrator. His widow, Margaret, and their children, later went with other family members to Macoupin Co. IL. Ages of his children are approximate. On 11 Aug 1834, Sarah C. Stevenson, David C. Stephenson, and Robert Young Stevenson were minors over the age of 14 when they chose their brother, Alexander C. Stevenson as their guardian. Alexander C. was also appointed guardian of Margaret Jane, Elizabeth C. and Martha A. who were under the age of 14. This accounts for 7 of the 10 children. The other 3, John, Mary, and William J. were probably of age. The widow and probably all of the children went to Macoupin Co IL about 1835.
His widow, Margaret Chestnut Stevenson, died in Macoupin Co., IL in 1844.

According to the 1850 census of Macoupin Co.,IL he was born about 1809. Was living in Macoupin Co., IL in 1854 when he received a settlement from his grandfather's will. No children were shown on the 1850 or 1860 census.
Was appointed guardian of his younger brothers and sisters in 1834 in Todd Co., KY. The family moved to Macoupin Co., IL about 1835. He married Celia Fletcher there in 1841. They had no children on the 1850 census. His middle initial C. was probably Chestnut, named for his maternal grandfather, Alexander Chestnut. He received a settlement of $73.32 from his grandfather's, John Stevenson, estate in 1854.
