'On the morning of 17th October, 1917, at WESTHOEK on duty carting planks for road making by his initiative and coolness under heavy gun fire, was of great assistance to Captain a. PINKERTON, 1st Australian Divisional Train (who reported this) in controlling traffic on roads blown up by enemy shells, getting his won wagons clear and generally showing a courageous spirit under consistent and very heavy shell fire. This N.C.O. also accompanied his convoy on seventeen consecutive days in forward area and his conduct throughout has been meritorious.'
