    OCCUPATION: Lord of Meath, Ireland, and of Weobley, co. Hereford.Walter de Lacy obtained , 9 King John [1208], a confirmation of hisdominion of Meath, to be held by him and his heir s for the service offifty knights' fees; as also of all his fees in Fingall, in the valley of Dublin, to be held by the service of seven knights' fees. In threeyears afterwards, King J ohn passing into Ireland with his army, Laci wasforced to deliver himself up and all his pos sessions in that kingdom andto abjure the realm. He was subsequently banished from England , but inthe 16th of the same reign [1215], he seems to have made his peace, forhe was the n allowed to repossess Ludlow, with his castle; and the nextyear he recovered all his land s in Ireland, except the castle and landsof Drogheda, by paying a fine of 4,000 marks to th e crown. After this wefind him sheriff of Herefordshire in the 18th of John [1217], and 2n d ofHenry III [1218], and in the 14th of the latter king [1230], joined withGeffrey de Mari sco, then justice of Ireland, and Richard de Burgh, insubduing the King of Connaught, who ha d taken up arms to expel theEnglish from his territories. So much for the secular acts of th ispowerful feudal baron. In Ireland he founded the abbey of Beaubec, whichwas first a cel l to the great abbey of Bec, in Normandy, and afterwardsto Furneise, in Lancashire. Walter L aci m. Margaret, dau. of William deBraose, of Brecknock, and in the year 1241, being then in firm and blind,departed this life, "Vir, inter omnes nobiles Hiberniae, eminentissimus,"lea ving his great inheritance to be divided amongst females, viz.., thedaus. of Gilbert de Lacy , his son (who d. in his life time), and Isabel,his wife, sister of John Bigod, which daught ers were Maud, wife of Peterde Geneva, and Margery, m. to John de Verdon.
