From 1262until her death she held one-third of the Cl are inheritance in dower, although her son Earl Gilbert the Red did successfully challenge th eoriginal composition of her dower portion, which was readjusted in 1267.Maud did not remar ry, preferring to spend her long widowhood living offthe revenues of her estates, contributi ng handsomely to ecclesiasticalfoundations, and helping to promote her children. Her activi ties onbehalf of her daughters Margaret and Rohese have been noted [see noteunder her husba nd Richard], and she also attempted, with less success,to present her son Bogo to the churc h of Adlingfleet in Yorkshire. Hergifts to religious houses were numerous. In 1248 Earl Ri chard foundedClare Priory, the first house of Austin Friars in England, and after hisdeat h the countess continued his generosity with several grants of landto the priory. In additi on, a scheme to found an Augustinian nunneryattracted her. In 1284 she refounded the prior y of Canonsleigh inDevon. Canonsleigh was originally established for seven Augustinian canons by Walter de Clavill, a mesne tenant of the honor of Gloucester, butin 1284 Maud provide d an annual gift of L200 for the support of anabbess and 40 canonesses of that order. She h ad originally had the ideaof doing this for Sandleford Priory in Berkshire, but for some rea sonthe plan fell through in 1274, and a decade later she refoundedCanonsleigh instead. B y 1286 the new nunnery was in existence, and thedispossessed canons were under royal protect ion." --- Michael Altschul, *A Baronial Family in Medieval England: TheClares, 1217-1314*, Baltimore MD (Johns Hopkins Press) 1965. p 36-37[CusterFebruary 1, 2002 Family T ree.FTW]
