John Lewis JONES b: ABT 1847 in Tenn
- Married:
ABT 1878
in Washington County, Utah Territory
- Note:
The year of marriage has been established as 1874 according to the 1900 census report. Rett's family was living at Washington, in Washington County at the time. The marriage register for Washington County, however, book A begins with the year 1885, so does not cover the periodwhen they would have married. It is not known if they married in theLDS church or not, a record has not been found. Rett maintained her membership in the church until her death in 1945, so this might be a clue that they did have an LDS ordinance for marriage -- the place has not yet been discovered. For the period 1847-1906 only 1,490 marriages were recorded in the branches and wards of the L.D.S. Church in Utah, less than 5% of the estimated 30,000 marriages that probably took place during this period. Among the factors which resulted in this lack of recorded information was the issue of polygamy among the Mormonsand the stance of the Federal government against its practice.
LDS Genealogical Surveys (FHL #1,059,454- 1,059,461) may contain biographical information as this was gathered from members in 1930.
