THE BROWNS The great-great-great-grandparents of famed abolitionist John Brown were Peter and Mary (Gillet) Brown. Their son John was born in 1668, and he later married Elizabeth Loomis.
John and Elizabeth (Loomis) Brown's son John was born in 1700, and he later married Mary Eggleston.
John and Mary (Eggleston) Brown's son John was born in 1728, and he later married Hannah Owens. Hannah (Owens) Brown's husband John lost his life serving in the Revolutionary War as Captain of "Train Band 9" of the 18th Connecticut regiment. The 48-year-old captain's widow had already given birth to 10 other children by the time of her husband's demise in 1776.
It was probably in the early 1790's when one of John and Hannah's sons, Owen Brown, married Ruth, daughter of Gideon Mills. And when Owen and Ruth moved down to Ohio in 1805, they had already been parents of a half-dozen children.
Salmon (#1) was born to Owen and Ruth; and he died later in 1796. Another Salmon was later born to the family. Levi Blakeslee was adopted by Owen and Ruth when he was only two years old. An infant son of Owen and Ruth died at birth. John was born to Owen and Ruth in 1800.

John was born July 25, 1821, at Hudson, OH. He married Wealthy Hotchkiss Jason was born January 19, 1823, at Hudson, OH. He married Ellen Sherboudy. Frederick (#1) was born January 9,1827, at Richmond, PA, and died March 31, 1833. Another Frederick was later born to the family. Ruth was born February 18, 1829 at Richmond, PA. She later married Henry Thompson. [see notes under James L. Thompson] Frederick (#2) was born December 21, 1830, at Richmond, PA. He was murdered at Osawatomie, KS, by Rev. Martin White on August 30, 1856. An infant son was born on August 7, 1832, and did not live. He was buried with his mother, Dianthe (Lusk) Brown on August 10, 1832.

Sarah was born on May 11, 1834, at Richmond, PA. She died on Septermber 23, 1843. Watson was born on October 7, 1835. He married Isabella Thompson in 1856. Watson was wounded at Harper's Ferry on October 17, 1859, and died two days later. Salmon was born October 2, 1836, at Hudson, OH. He married Abba (or Abbie) Hinkley in 1856, and later they had a daughter named Cora. [Abbie and Cora were later living in NY: 1860 census, North Elba, Essex county, NY] Charles was born on November 3, 1837, at Hudson, OH. He died on September 11, 1843. Oliver was born on March 9, 1839, at Franklin, OH. He married Martha Brewster in 1858. Oliver was killed at Harper's Ferry on October 17, 1859. Peter was born on December 7, 1840, and died on September 22, 1843. Austin was born on September 14, 1842, at Richfield, OH. He died the following year. Anne was born on December 23, 1843. [Later she lived in NY: 1860 census, North Elba, Essex county, NY] Amelia was born on June 22, 1845, at Akron, OH. She died the following year. Sarah was born on September 11, 1846. Ruth (Mills) Brown, wife of Owen Brown, died sometime during the year 1806. Widower Owen Brown took Sally Root as his second wife, and they went on to have eight more children:
Sally Marian was born to Owen and Sally (Root) Brown in 1811. She later married Titus Hand. Florilla (or Florella) was born in 1816 to Owen and Sally. Florilla passed away around the age of 49 in 1865. She married Rev. Samuel L. Adair in 1841. Rev. Adair was born in 1811 and lived till 1898. {Barbara Rentenbach is related to Samuel Adair}
Addie E. Adair, Samuel and Florilla's daughter, was born during 1856 in Kansas, and she died during 1903 in San Diego, CA. Addie was married to John and Bridgette (McGrath) Fleming's son, Thomas A. Flemming, who was born during 1857 in Michigan. {Barbara Rentenbach's husband is related to Bridgette McGrath}

Her son Luther gave up his life in defense of his country and her son Charles practiced medicine. The second wife of John B. Thompson was Clarissa Haynes. She had one daughter, Electa, (Mrs. P. D. Struble).
