Note: John Fain came into Habersham County, Georgia from Pendleton District, South Carolina before 1820. By 1834 they had moved to Union County, Georgia and to Fannin County, Georgia (then Gilmer County) by 1840, where they lived in the Colwell Militia District.
John Fain and Betsey Butt Fain were the parents of fifteen children, nine boys and six girls. Their oldest son was Mercer Fain, a prominent citizen of Murphy, North Carolina, where he was a merchant, land owner and the first president of the Georgia and North Carolina Railroad. Their second son was Clayton Fain, an attorney who represented Fannin and Union Counties in the Georgia Legislature around the time of the Civil War. Their fifth son was Dr. Thomas T. Fain, a Fannin County physician.
Six of their sons served in the Civil War, one in the Union Army and five in the Confederate States Army. Clayton Fain was in the Union soldier, a Captain in the Georgia Volunteers of the U. S. Army. He was killed by a Confederate guerilla at Cooperhill, Tennessee. His brothers, Ebenezer and Allen, also died in the war, while brothers Thomas, Jack, and Casuill survived.
John Fain died July 15, 1873 and Betsey Butt Fain died October 23, 1888. Both are buried in Morganton Baptist Church Cemetery.
